How Do Veneers Create Stunning Smiles?

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in San Francisco Veneers have a multitude of applications in Daly City cosmetic dentistry. With veneers, you can transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the brilliance and translucency of healthy tooth enamel. Many San Francisco dental patients have received veneers to cover worn enamel. Some believe they look twenty years younger!

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? Tooth grinding, natural wear and other factors can roughen tooth edges. Veneers are a minimally invasive correction for uneven tooth edges.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? If your teeth are otherwise healthy, veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Veneers can fix that, too. Veneers can be fabricated in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your other teeth and skin tones.

Porcelain veneers are paper-thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. Traditional veneers required the removal of a thin layer of tooth structure. Prepless veneers are applied to unaltered teeth.

Veneers are strong, natural looking, and one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. Of course, a tooth with extensive damage may need a dental crown.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for you. Kenneth Hovden DDS is located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City. We provide premium dental care for many of your friends and neighbors in the greater San Francisco area. Our phone number is 650-763-8794.

    Sedation Dentistry In Daly City

Daly City sedation dentistry Many Daly City dentistry patients have discovered the benefits of anxiety-free dentistry (sometimes called sleep dentistry). There are three main types of sedation options available in the San Francisco area for patients to think about:

    Inhalation

Nitrous Oxide, sometimes called ‘laughing gas‘ has been used in San Mateo cosmetic dental offices for over a century, because, in many ways, it is an ideal sedative. It begins to work quickly, but then wears off as soon as the Pacifica dental patient stops inhaling it. Breathing nitrous oxide assists in creating warm tingling sensations and a feeling of euphoria.

    Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedatives take longer to work than nitrous, but produce a calmer state for many nervous San Mateo dental patients. Triazolam and diazepam are common oral sedatives used in dentistry. These sedative medications are routinely prescribed by San Francisco physicians for anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms.

Oral sedation is a good sedation choice for anxious patients who require a lengthy dental procedure. After the dental visit, however, it takes a while for the medication to wear off. It’s important that a conscious sedation patient not drive home after undergoing oral sedation.

    IV Sedation

Like nitrous, intra-venous sedation starts working immediately as the sedative enters the bloodstream. IV sedation usually produces the deepest state of relaxation. IV patients can dream away the entire procedure and wake up calm.

To speak with us about sedation, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794. We have the answer for your dental anxiety.

Are Floss Picks As Good As Regular Dental Floss?

    flossing

Floss picks vs regular floss? While it’s better to floss with a floss pick than to not floss at all, it’s important to note that floss picks can only clean a part of the tooth’s surface. Dr. Hovden recommends traditional floss or dental tape. Here’s why:

A floss pick holds just a small segment of floss stretched in a straight line. Looking down, a tooth is shaped somewhat round or oval, with occasional irregularities. A straight length of floss just doesn’t make sense geometrically because it doesn’t conform to the contours of the tooth as well as traditional floss used correctly. By wrapping the floss completely around the circumference of a tooth, you can more efficiently clean that essential area around and just below the gumline. And your fingers are much more agile than a piece of plastic.

We have seen patients who are dutiful floss pick users who developed decay due to a a minuscule crack the floss pick missed day after day.

Here is a review on appropriate flossing:

    • Cut a section of floss about 18 inches long and securely wind each end around your middle fingers.
    • Take hold of the floss with your forefinger and thumb leaving about two inches to work with.
    • Thread the floss between two teeth.
    • Hold the floss firmly against the side of the tooth and move it up and away from the gumline. You want to clean the space between the tooth and gum without pulling more gum tissue away, so it’s vital to scrape up and out of the pocket.
    • Move the floss around the tooth to clean every surface – especially those that your brush can’t reach. You can use a “shoeshine” method if you like. As you use a section of floss, unwind from one hand to access a clean piece. With 18 inches, you should have enough to deliver a clean piece for each tooth. If you run out, that’s okay. Just toss the used piece and cut a new piece.
    • Some people find it easier to begin on one end of the upper teeth and clean each gap one by one until they reach the end on the opposite side, and then repeat for the lower arch. Whatever method you elect, make sure you clean around every tooth, including the back surfaces of the rear molars.

If you have never flossed before, your gums might bleed the first few times. The bleeding may be due to gum inflammation, the beginnings of gum disease. Keep flossing gently and the bleeding commonly stops within a week or two.

Teeth Look Too Short? Lengthen Them!

    fix gummy smile Daly City

Most Daly City people who are considering cosmetic dentistry are aware of the cosmetic dental procedures that are frequently advertised in the San Francisco area.

There are porcelain veneers: a custom made wafer-thin covering permanently attached to the front of a tooth to make it stain-free and perfectly shaped. Veneers can repair small chips and crack in teeth that are free of decay. Many Kenneth Hovden DDS patients get minimally invasive veneers on their top six teeth for a dramatic improvement.

Orthodontia has received a lot of attention in California in the past twenty years with the introduction of invisible and short-term braces. And braces are not only for ‘tweens and teenagers. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we have seen more adults straighten their teeth to achieve dazzling smiles with discrete orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain crowns have been around for generations but continue to restore decayed or damaged teeth while providing beauty, strength and natural function. Porcelain crowns are also used with state-of-the art dental implants to restore missing teeth.

A cosmetic dental procedure that is lesser known in the Daly City area is crown lengthening. If you feel that your teeth appear too short or that your smile exposes more gum than you would like (a ‘gummy smile’), you may be interested in crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth while minimizing the vertical length of exposed gum tissue.

When a gummy smile is corrected, our Daly City crown lengthening patients are often surprised at how it positively affects their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth that have been hidden under gum tissue their whole life.

Sometimes, crown lengthening is used when a tooth is fractured at the gumline. The surgery makes tooth structure accessible for the necessary restoration.

Digital imaging helps San Francisco dental professionals perform crown lengthening with exactness. A highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure allows the cosmetic dentist to contour a gumline to the patient’s exact specifications.

If you would like to find out if crown lengthening is right for you, schedule a consultation by calling Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794. We are located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City. We look forward to showing you photos of crown lengthening patients who are enjoying their new look.

    Tooth Bleaching Fact And Fiction

Daly City Teeth Whitening You have probably seen ads for bleaching products contain terms such as “white brite,” “22 carbamide peroxide” and “peroxide teeth.” How do you separate tooth bleaching fact from fiction?

Some tooth whitening dentists will guarantee fantastic results for any patient that desires a whiter smile. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we only recommend tooth bleaching for patients that are good candidates for the process. We invite you to speak with Dr. Hovden, DDS at our Daly City office. Not all teeth whitening systems are appropriate for every person.

Don’t be fooled by smile whitening hype and risk poor results. If you have existing cosmetic dental work such as crowns, bonding, partial dentures or bridge work, it is critical to talk to an experienced professional about worry-free teeth whitening.

If you have all-natural teeth that are dull or stained, tooth whitening will probably brighten your smile. If you have several crowns in the front of your mouth, veneers, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not be successful.

Porcelain veneers may be a better solution for you. There are several brands of veneers such as Lumineers by Cerinate, da Vinci and Mac. The vast majority of Daly City veneer recipients are delighted with the results. Porcelain veneers not only brighten your smile, they can provide many other improvements.

Veneers are sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because they can correct tooth misalignment and gaps as well as provide instant teeth whitening.

Schedule a consultation by calling 650-763-8794. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your unique smile.

4 Reasons To Get Your Child To Your The Dentist

    Pacifica family dentist

Did you know that The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first visit to a dentist should occur around twelve months of age?

For many parents in the San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay area, this may come as a surprise. Today in the Kenneth Hovden DDS post, we are going to review 4 reasons why your toddler’s teeth are worth a dental visit.

    1. Twelve months of age happens to be about the time when a child’s first teeth tend to erupt. Once those teeth are out, it’s time to get them looked at by a professional.

    2. One of the most important things your Pacifica or Half Moon Bay dentist will do at this visit will be to clean those young teeth and apply fluoride.

    3. Visiting the dentist at a young age is a great way to help your child get used to the dentist’s office. This will help them to be more comfortable with the dentist as they grow older.

    4. Visiting the dentist also helps parents enlist the help of other adults is establishing good dental habits in their children. Starting early dental visits will mean that later in life your child is less likely to require braces or other cosmetic dentistry procedures such as dental implants.

If your child is apprehensive about visiting the dentist, you might want to bring them for a short tour of our office beforehand. They can meet our friendly staff and learn what to expect when they come in for their exam.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden, of Daly City. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover or other cosmetic dentistry procedures, contact my professional dental team at 650-763-8794.

Relieving Your Dental Anxiety At Kenneth Hovden DDS

Relieving Your Dental Anxiety At Kenneth Hovden DDSHello San Francisco dental blog visitors, welcome to the Kenneth Hovden DDS blog. I am Dr. Kenneth Hovden in Daly City.

A close friend of mine recently expressed fears about her upcoming root canal. She was anxious about the pain she might experience and worried about getting work off for the multiple office visits to complete the procedure. I assured her that painful root canal procedures are a thing of the past with modern dentistry.

With the latest technology and anesthetics, a root canal (endodontic treatment) is no more painful than receiving a filling. Most root canals can be completed in one or two office visits.

If you have been neglecting your teeth because of fears or concerns about a particular procedure and have not been to your Daly City dentist recently, I encourage you to schedule an exam, cleaning, and consultation today.

We are accepting new patients at Kenneth Hovden DDS and would love to serve you. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we offer restorative dentistry, Invisalign, and Lumineers.

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

Cosmetic dentistry in Daly City, CA

In a perfect world, each of your precious teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most California men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by dental caries, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

    Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair minor cosmetic issues – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is generally the most reasonably-priced option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

    Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of cavities. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

    Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Kenneth Hovden DDS leaves you with more of nature’s optimal dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

    Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab, they are commonly called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are commonly smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

    Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, stability, and function. A crown is commonly needed for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with acute decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

    Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to prevent further damage. Gum surgery is also executed for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

    Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Kenneth Hovden DDS patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the ideal solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, restrict bone recession, and do not affect the surrounding teeth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, custom-made implant-anchored dentures can be established in any configuration needed.

For more specifics about any of these procedures, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794. Thanks for visiting the Kenneth Hovden DDS blog. We appreciate your interest in our Daly City dental practice.
