Is Your Smile In A World Of Hurt?

    full mouth reconstruction San Francisco

Do you have acute tooth damage, bone loss, or few or no teeth still intact? This post is for San Francisco area residents whose mouths are in a world of hurt.

First off, we feel for you. We understand how severe dental problems affect you every day of your life.

Whatever the cause of the condition – chemotherapy, recreational drug use, eating disorder, acute mouth injury, disability, inadequate oral hygiene, or simply poor overall health – there is hope.

Full mouth reconstruction can restore your previously healthy, beautiful smile or give you the beautiful smile you never had. Patients who undergo full mouth reconstruction regain their confidence to smile, eat, and speak normally. How would that influence your life?

Replacing missing teeth and adding bone through grafting restores underlying facial structure, improving or preventing that “sunk-in” look that develops when teeth are gone and the jawbone recedes.

Full mouth reconstruction (sometimes called full mouth restoration) is a term which refers to a combination of dental procedures that restore a smile for people with numerous damaged or missing teeth. Treatment may include any combination of the following procedures: crowns, inlays/onlays, dental bonding, white filling replacement, tooth implants, porcelain veneers, implant-anchored dentures, gum contouring, soft tissue grafts, bone grafts, and tooth whitening.

Dental implants are often the best tooth replacement for Kenneth Hovden DDS patients with missing teeth. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. If there is not enough bone to anchor an implant, bone grafting may be carried out to augment existing bone. The post integrates with the bone to provide a durable foundation for the abutment and beautiful crown. Dental implants are indistinguishable from original teeth in both form and function.

If you currently have dentures, speak with us about implant-anchored full or partial dentures. Significant improvements can be made even if you only get two or three tooth implants.

Crowns (sometimes called caps) are used when there is enough viable tooth structure that the tooth doesn’t need to be extracted. A crown adds strength to a tooth that has a large filling or has been injured. A crown can repair a bite misalignment and is usually necessary after a root canal. In a dental implant procedure, attaching the crown to the abutment is the final step.

Kenneth Hovden DDS offers a full menu of cosmetic dental care including total mouth reconstruction. Cosmetic dentistry may be more affordable than you think. Talk to us about financing or a multi-procedure treatment schedule that allows you to pay as you go. Restoring a healthy smile may be the best investment you ever make.

Affordable Teeth Whitening In San Francisco?

Affordable San Francisco Tooth Whitening Like most, you have probably seen the multitude of ads for ‘free teeth whitening kits’.

Some show a ‘real mom’ who discovered a ‘tooth whitening secret’. Others assure you that their system is the one that ‘dentists don’t want you to know about’. Many contain a link to a page that contains a convincing tooth whitening testimonial. They bolster their legitimacy by aligning themselves with respected companies such as CNN, USA Today and Forbes.

Unfortunately, most of these are rip-offs. In a recent article, the Better Business Bureau explains the scam:

The countless web sites for various teeth whitening products claim to offer a no-risk, money back guarantee, free trial of the product. To sign up, customers must provide a credit or debit card number to cover shipping. Complainants to BBB state that they are billed before their trial ends and continue to be billed after they have told the company they want to cancel.

Complainants also may find mystery charges for other companies and services that they didn’t realize they were signing up for with their ‘free’ trial.

The BBB has received complaints about the following company/product names:

    • Dazzle White
    • White Smile
    • Teeth Smile
    • Dazzle Smile
    • Ivory White
    • Max White
    • My Whitening
    • Gleaming White Smile
    • Advanced Wellness Research

Don’t trust your smile to an internet scammer. Your dental office is the only place for safe teeth bleaching. You don’t want to take a chance with your credit card number or your tooth enamel! Call us at Kenneth Hovden DDS for advanced cosmetic dentistry and worry-free tooth whitening. You can reach us at 650-763-8794

Can You Straighten Your Teeth Without Braces?

Spring Retainers Can Correct Alignment Without Braces

Many people could improve their smile with braces, yet only a portion are currently undergoing treatment. Some delay or forego orthodontic treatment because they believe it is a difficult, pricey process requiring traditional metal braces.

Not every tooth alignment problem requires braces, however. An orthodontic appliance known as a spring retainer is often a great solution for people who need minimal adjustment to correct alignment (and do not have an overbite or underbite).1

Spring retainers are removable, less noticeable, and less costly than conventional braces. Unlike traditional retainers which are designed to maintain alignment and prevent further shifting, spring retainers can move teeth 1-2 mm in the desired direction. They are often recommended for orthodontic patients who neglected to wear their retainer after undergoing orthodontic treatment to have their teeth aligned.

Creating a spring retainer is relatively uncomplicated: an orthodontics lab forms a mold of the teeth based on the desired end result. Spring retainers are most often used for the front teeth and incisors but can sometimes be expanded to include other teeth as well.2

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we offer a variety of orthodontic options. If you would like your teeth corrected, call us at 650-763-8794 to schedule an orthodontic consultation.

We also offer the full spectrum of cosmetic dental procedures including teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges, and cosmetic bonding.

Infancy Through Childhood: Instill Good Brushing Habits

    infant dental exam Daly City

New parents may be surprised by the American Dental Association’s recommendations on infant oral care. Parents are advised to begin brushing their baby’s teeth as soon as the first teeth emerge. After all, brand-new teeth are just as vulnerable to dental caries as older teeth.

Parents are encourage to use a cloth and a smidgen of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) to wipe each tooth. As more teeth come in, it becomes more critical for the teeth to be brushed after each meal or, at least, twice a day.

It is vital to settle upon the proper toothbrush, in order to make brushing time as pleasant as possible. A soft bristled brush is best with a small amount of toothpaste. Infant and toddler-sized toothbrushes with a small head of bristles are useful. Also, there are circle and triangular-shaped brushes that allow your toddler to walk around with their brush with less chance of injury in case of a fall.

If the toothpaste is causing an unpleasant struggle, brush without toothpaste. The goal is to remove food bits that will create bacteria followed by plaque and then cavities.

When two teeth touch, it’s time to floss. Flossing is essential to make sure no food is lodged between the teeth. Proper flossing requires fine motor skills which most kids don’t develop before age six or seven. Parents need to assist with flossing until they are sure their child can do it effectively.

Until the child is old enough to properly brush his or her teeth, they should receive adult supervision and guidance. Instilling the proper brushing and flossing methods will reap lifelong benefits. While it may seem that supervising them is time consuming, remember that it’s resulting in a daily habit that will protect their health. Also, dental expenses related to poor oral hygiene will be avoided.

Your child’s first dental visit should be within six months of the first tooth appearing and no later than their first birthday. It may seem early, but just as your pediatrician sees your baby regularly to make sure their physical health is on track and counsel you about your vital role, you can count on your dentist to look out for potential issues and counsel you about how to help your child preserve a healthy smile.

Seek your dentist’s counsel regarding pacifiers and sippy cups, nighttime bottles, and x-ray safety. Dentist can counsel parents with older children about sealants, tooth protection for athletics, and orthodontics.

If you live in the San Francisco area and don’t yet have a trusted family dentist, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794 to schedule your child’s dental appointment with Dr. Kenneth Hovden. By starting young, your child will become familiar with our friendly staff, ensuring that he or she never develops a fear of the dentist.

    Help! My Crown Came Off!

repair broken dental crown Daly City

You are chewing an apple and hear an odd sound. Something in your mouth feels wrong. One of your crowns has popped free. Chances are, the crown (which cost you hundreds of dollars) can be re-cemented.

What do you do when your dental crown comes off?
It’s essential that you take the following steps:

    Don’t Swallow It!
This may seem like a no-brainer, but it is essential. Carefully take the crown out of your mouth. If you accidentally swallow it, you will have some extra troubles that aren’t pleasant.

    Look Carefully
Inspect the crown and your tooth. If there is damage to either, Dr. Hovden will need that information. Which brings me to number 3:

    Call Kenneth Hovden DDS
We will schedule you an appointment right away and guide you on whether you should use temporary cement to re-attach the crown until you can have it permanently re-cemented.

    Clean Gently
Use a toothbrush to cautiously clean the crown and the unprotected partial tooth.

    Handle With Care
While waiting for the crown to be re-cemented, skip substances that are chewy, sticky, or crunchy.

    Are Dental Veneers Reversible?

    prepless veneers

With many  residents looking to improve their smile, porcelain veneers are a successful option. Unlike a crown that completely covers the tooth, a veneer is a super thin layer of a very tough porcelain, composite bonding, or ceramic. When bonded to a tooth, the veneer creates a natural, translucent, and perfect new surface. It improves the appearance of the visible portion of your tooth instantly. Here’s a look at the process:

    The Consultation

First, schedule a consultation with Dr. Hovden. Before you come in, examine what you do not like about your smile and know how you want it improved. Veneers may not be optimal for you. Other cosmetic dental procedures may be a better fit for the characteristics you wish to change.

Porcelain veneers can repair many minor to moderate troubles, including the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Gaps between teeth can be filled, and teeth can be lengthened or shortened to complete your beautiful smile.

We’ll discuss both types of veneers: “traditional” and “prepless.” Before a traditional veneer is put on the tooth, the dentist first removes a very thin layer of enamel. Enamel cannot be replaced, which is one reason this method is irreversible.

The second method is called “no-prep” or “prepless.” With this type, enamel removal is usually not necessary. When no enamel is removed, the treatment can be reversible. However, this method has specific criteria.

In addition, it is possible to use both types of veneers for multiple teeth, depending on the condition of each tooth.

Your dentist will help you evaluate your unique needs and guide you on how to reach your goals. Once you and your dentist have created a dental plan, your dentist will work with a laboratory and dental team to assure everything is carried out as discussed.

If you do not have a cosmetic dentist, we invite you to visit our distinctive practice. Dr. Hovden is a renowned smile makeover artist. Call 650-763-8794 today to schedule a cosmetic dental consultation.

8 Things You Should Know About Your Baby’s Teeth

    Daly City pediatric dentistry

Life is hectic for new moms and dads and some function on very little sleep for several months. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we don’t want the first year to fly by in a blur without busy parents giving a thought to their baby’s teeth. Unfortunately “out of sight, out of mind” is often the case. It’s never too early for new parents to construct a plan for their child’s lifelong oral health.

    1. Before the first teeth appear, clean gums with a soft damp cloth or piece of gauze after feeding.

    2. Prevent baby bottle tooth decay.  Parents are cautioned from the beginning not to put babies to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. However, since baby-bottle cavities is still fairly common, this warning bears repetition. Baby bottle tooth decay is entirely preventable. If your baby will not sleep without a bottle, use only water. Moms who breastfeed should understand that breast milk is just as effective at creating an environment for decay. If your child uses a pacifier, don’t dip it in sugar or honey.

    3. Take your infant to the dentist early. That’s right – infant. Your child’s first dental exam should occur when the first teeth erupt, usually between six months and one year of age.

    4. When your baby’s first tooth peeks through, begin brushing gently with a small, soft toothbrush and a grain of rice sized dot of fluoride toothpaste. This aids in keeping that tooth decay-free while allowing your baby to get comfortable with regular oral hygiene.

    5. From the ages of 3 to 6, the amount of toothpaste can increase to a pea-sized dab. Most children swallow instead of spitting. You don’t want your child to swallow more than a minuscule smear of toothpaste. While fluoride is important, too much can be detrimental.

    6. Consider dental sealants. Sealants guard the teeth and prevent cavities by filling in the cracks and fissures where food particles can hide, breeding dangerous bacteria that doesn’t take long to create cavities. Sealants are especially essential in the back teeth which, due to the abundance of crevasses, are hardest to clean properly. During your child’s first check-up at our Daly City office, you can talk to Kenneth Hovden about sealants. Sealants aren’t usually applied until all of the teeth have come in, but it’s a good idea to seek a dentist’s advice at your first visit.

    7. Talk to your dentist about pacifier use, thumb-sucking, or any other habits that affect teeth and jaw development.

    8. Teach your toddler to drink from a cup as soon as possible. The fewest months your child uses a bottle, the better. Even if your child loves his bottle, you are going to have to take it away sooner or later.

At in Daly City, we love our littlest patients. To make an appointment for your infant or toddler, call us today at 650-763-8794.

Trust Dr. Hovden For Accurate Dental Info

    Daly City family dentistry

Dental patients are more informed than ever before. Much of this knowledge about oral health and dental treatment comes from online sources. While proactive self-education can be helpful, especially if it assists in living a healthy lifestyle, we caution our patients not to count on online dental information until your dentist verifies its accuracy.

Misconceptions about medical and dental treatment began circulating long before personal computers became ubiquitous, but the web has exponentially accelerated the speed and distance they can travel.

Some of the most frequent dental myths are focused on the safety of x-rays, the risk of root canals, the facts about fluoride, and the effectiveness of alternative practices such as oil pulling.

In worst-case scenarios, misinformed patients who delay treatment experience permanent dental health consequences. We encourage all of our patients to discuss all areas of concern with Dr. Hovden. You can trust our knowledgeable staff for accurate information and quality care.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we are dedicated to keeping your smile healthy and beautiful for life. Since 1981, we have provided exceptional general and cosmetic dental services including TMJ treatment, Lumineers, restorative dentistry, Invisalign, and sleep apnea and snoring.

    Save Your Breath

    bad breath treatments Daly City

Today’s post focuses on a problem experienced by many people – bad breath.

Bad breath, or halitosis, has several causes. The most common cause is lax oral hygiene. Often, halitosis occurs midday arising from the inability to brush teeth between meals. Small food parts on the teeth, gums, and tongue grow bacteria. The wastes of the bacteria and decay of the food create a sulfur compound, which emits the offensive odor. Food particles, bacteria, and sulfuric gas all need to be removed to eliminate bad breath caused by poor oral hygiene.

While poor oral hygiene is the most frequent cause of halitosis, many circumstances can contribute to or worsen the trouble. In addition to coming in for regular checkups with Dr. Hovden, the best remedy is consistent, thorough brushing and flossing.

For example, a salivary gland issue or certain medications can cause dry mouth. Saliva moistens the teeth and gums, clearing away odiferous dead cells. Saliva also neutralizes the ever-present acids on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. Limiting caffeine, chewing sugar-free gum, using OTC saliva substitutes, and using a humidifier can add moisture to the mouth.

Most Common Causes of Bad Breath:

    Poor oral hygiene
    Inability to brush between meals
    Gum disease or dental caries
    An infected root canal
    Kidney failure
    Liver problems
    Dry mouth (Xerostomia)
    Crooked teeth
    Ear, nose, throat issues
    Tonsil issues
    Constant breathing through the mouth
Specific foods: garlic, onions, horseradish, etc.
    Some prescription medications
    Ill-fitting dentures

To Minimize or Prevent Bad Breath:

Go to the dentist twice a year for professional dental cleanings
Brush teeth, tongue, gums, and roof of the mouth
Use a tongue spray or scraper
    Use antimicrobial mouth rinse
    Chew sugarless gum
Brush and floss after each meal
Drink plenty of water (A dry mouth is conducive to bacteria growth)
Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months
Have a toothbrush and floss available when you are out
Talk to your doctor or dentist if bad breath continues despite proper oral hygiene

Remember, the very best defense to bad breath is a good dental care routine – brushing, flossing, and regular visits with your dentist.
If you struggle with bad breath regardless of vigilant oral hygiene, ask your dentist for help in identifying the source. It may be an issue outside of the oral cavity. If this is the case, your dentist may refer you to your family physician or a specialist.

If you don’t have a regular dentist or are unhappy with your current one, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hovden at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. Dr. Hovden has been serving patients in the San Francisco area since 1981.
