Great Reasons to Floss Your Teeth

Three Great Reasons to Floss Your Teeth by Kenneth Hovden DDS

Flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing them, which is why we always remind our patients to floss at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. We’re using this short blog post to review the best reasons to floss.

  • Flossing and gum disease. Since dental floss gets into areas your toothbrush cannot reach, it is an important part of preventing gum disease. Just as filmy plaque forms on the surfaces of teeth, it gets between them, too. It hardens into tarter, and in time can result in gum disease. By removing it daily with dental floss, you go a long way toward heading off gum disease.
  • Flossing and systemic diseases. Your dental health is linked to your overall health, and flossing plays an important role. It has a positive impact on such potentially deadly diseases as diabetes, respiratory diseases, and heart disease.
  • Flossing and bad breath. This may seem like small potatoes compared to the above, but bad breath afflicts a lot of people. Brushing your teeth isn’t enough to eliminate it. Flossing will get the gunk that builds up between your teeth and contributes to bad breath.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we recommend flossing your teeth at least once every day, and brushing at least twice. Flossing before bedtime is best. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to our practice to maintain good dental health with general and restorative dentistry. Schedule your next checkup today!

Do Veneers Make Teeth Look Bigger?

San Mateo cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Porcelain veneers do not make your teeth look larger – unless you want them to. A veneer can correct many flaws and is a minimally invasive restoration. Porcelain veneers are among the cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City.

Veneers are an easy way to cover chips or cracks in your teeth, or gaps between them. They are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic cemented to the front of your teeth. Each veneer is custom-fitted to the tooth it is being affixed to.

Although veneers are generally considered a cosmetic procedure, they can also be used to replace lost enamel. The enamel that covers teeth is one of the strongest substances in the human body, but it can be damaged from years of consuming acidic foods or drinks, by acid reflux, or even by brushing your teeth too vigorously over the years. Veneers are an excellent remedy.

One caveat: when a veneer is placed over a tooth, a thin layer of existing enamel must be removed to make room for it. That means they are a permanent procedure.

Porcelain veneers are just one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures offered here at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. Find out why people from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay trust us with their smiles! Call for an appointment today!

Stick Out Your Tongue!

San Francisco oral cancer exams

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we diagnose and treat conditions of the teeth and gums on a daily basis. These conditions can affect the tongue. We’re using this blog post to discuss the tongue.

Have you ever considered all the important things your tongue can do? It helps us talk, perceive the texture and flavor of food, chew, and swallow. It’s a strong and nimble gymnast, and it’s in nonstop motion during our waking hours.

Your tongue can also reveal physical problems. These may include digestive issues, infections, and diseases of the blood.

Tongue abnormalities and possible causes include:

  • Swollen tongue: reaction to food/drink/medication, strep infection, leukemia, hypothyroidism
  • White tongue: dehydration, yeast infection, irritation to tobacco, enteritis, gastritis, colitis, anemia, or other nutritional deficiency
  • Canker sores: may be linked to stress or reaction to food, toothpaste, or mouthwash.

If you have persistent canker sores, you may want to try eliminating products that contain sodium lauryl (or laurel) sulfate (SLS). SLS is a cheap foaming agent that is found in many personal care products.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we offer complete general dentistry. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to us for restorative dentistry, and much more. Call to schedule an appontment with us today!

Not Happy With Your Dentist?

San Mateo cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Looking for a new dentist? It’s easy to find one. A quick Google search, a Yelp review or two, and you’ll have a short list of possibilities. The trick is finding a dentist you’re happy with! At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we’re proud of our positive online reviews.

Even so, knowing whether a dentist is right for you can be a little tricky. What traits should you look for? There are a lot of factors that come into play. Do you choose a dentist near your home? By experience and education? Or maybe because a friend recommended a practice?

What To Look For

It may not be an exact science. But here are some of the things we think you should look for when trying to find a dentist:

  • Continuing Education. Dentistry is complex, and always changing. A good dentist is committed to staying on top of innovations and developments. A desire and willingness to improve is a trait to look for.
  • Sharing Information. A good dentist is always ready to explain what’s going on with your dental health. Any issues you might have should be explained in plain English.
  • A Good Listener. Whether it’s a general dentist, a pediatric dentist, or some other specialty, a good dentist will listen to your concerns and address any issues you might raise.
  • Conservative. Not every smile needs to be corrected to meet an ideal; not every cavity needs to be filled right away. A good dentist will take a conservative approach to treatment, and always do what is best for you.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we strive for excellence in dentistry every single day. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to our office for general and  restorative dentistry, and much more. We hope to see you in our office for a cleaning and checkup soon!

Preventive Dentistry At Kenneth Hovden DDS

tooth decay pictures at http://cosmeticimplantdentistryca.com/

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we do everything we can to keep the teeth and gums of our patients clean and healthy. In other words, we really stress dental health: how to get it and how to keep it. One of the best approaches is with preventive dentistry.

Preventive dentistry – or preventative, as some say – combines good dental hygiene at home with regular visits to our office. The goal is avoiding gum disease, tooth decay, and enamel wear.

Twice A Year

As a rule of thumb, we recommend a dental appointment every six months. At each visit, one of our hygienists will inspect and clean your teeth. We may take x-rays, too.

The dentist also does an inspection of your teeth and gums. If there is any new decay we’ll fill it. We’ll also check for any signs of gum disease.

Brush and Floss

At home, you should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day, and flossing at least once. Brushing is easily the most important part of preventive dentistry. Use a toothpaste with fluoride, and has the American Dental Association seal on the tube. Use a soft-bristled brush, and replace it every three months or so.

Flossing your teeth every day is how you clean out the spaces between your teeth. There’s no way a toothbrush can get the gunk that builds up there. If you have any questions about flossing, ask our hygienist for some tips at your next checkup.

Prevention is always the best medicine! At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City our patients come from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay for regular cleanings and checkups. Our services include general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule your next appointment today!

Smile Makeover Questions Answered At Kenneth Hovden DDS

Half Moon Bay cosmetic smile makeover

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we use cosmetic dentistry every day to create fabulous new smiles for our patients. We call this a “smile makeover.” What exactly does it entail?

A smile makeover means using the techniques of cosmetic dentistry to make positive changes to your smile. These techniques might include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Bonding
  • Clear braces

A beautiful smile is the sum of its parts. With the patient’s input, we do a smile analysis to evaluate his or her smile. Our goal is to bring the teeth, skeletal structures, and muscles into harmony. It’s a complicated endeavor, requiring an understanding of how all of these components relate to one another.

Any one of the techniques listed above will go a long way toward transforming your smile. Two or more can leave you with the smile of your dreams.

To find out what cosmetic dentistry can do for your smile, call us at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to our office for dental implants and much more. Schedule an appointment today!

Questions To Ask Your Dentist

Questions To Ask Your Daly City Dentist

Your smile is important to you, and at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City it’s our job to help keep it clean and healthy. We encourage all our patients, from newcomers to those who have been with us for years, to bring questions about their smiles to each and every checkup.

In this article we’re going to describe some of the most common questions we get.

  • How Can I Improve My Smile? This is one of the most common, and it’s a really good one. The answer is not going to be the same for every patient, of course. If you’re already in good dental health, we can talk about what cosmetic dentistry procedures may be best, like teeth whitening or porcelain veneers. If your dental health has room for improvement, we can talk about, which leads us to the next common question.
  • What Should My Daily Dental Health Routine Be? Your at-home care is probably the most important part of your dental health regimen. We recommend, strongly, brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes, gently and thoroughly. Right after breakfast and just before bed are good times. Don’t forget to floss!
  • Do I Have Any Dental Health Conditions I Should Know About? If you do, we’ll see them and tell you – but it’s still good to ask. Think of it as a conversation-starter. If there are issues, we can talk about treatment plans.
  • How Often Should I Have a Checkup? There is no hard-and-fast answer for this. As a rule of thumb we recommend every six months. Some patients can go longer between checkups, while others may need to see us more often, especially if there are ongoing issues and treatment.

These are the most common, but there are others. We encourage you to bring your dental health questions to every checkup. Patient education is an important part of what we do. People come to Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay for general and restorative dentistry, and much more. Do I Need A Dental Cleaning If I Brush And Floss At Home?

dental cleanings Daly City

This blog post from Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City focuses on professional teeth cleanings. You might wonder if you need a professional dental cleaning if you already brush and floss every day at home.

The answer is yes: both are important, because they work together to maintain your dental health.

We encourage patients to practice preventative dentistry by:

  • Brushing
  • Flossing
  • Healthy diet – fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts
  • Regular dental cleanings
  • Regular checkups

Dental cleanings increase the effectiveness of your daily oral care by removing the plaque and tarter that can accumulate, even if you brush and floss every day. When plaque hardens, it can only be removed with the special tools used by a hygienist.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, our services include complete general dentistry. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to our practice to improve their smiles with our cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Missing Pieces In The Mouth?

cost of dental crowns San Francisco

A missing puzzle piece may not ruin a jigsaw puzzle, but a missing tooth can be very unsightly and ruin your smile. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we have dental implants that can restore a smile.

A missing tooth can cause more than an unpleasant appearance. When a tooth and its root are gone, the teeth on each side of the gap begin to rotate. This can result in trouble eating and even speaking.

To make matters worse, the missing tooth root can also lead to bone recession. The jawbone is stimulated and kept healthy by biting and chewing action. When the root isn’t there anymore, the bone actually begins to recede. This leads to a shrunken appearance in the face.

Dental implants can solve this. An implant is a post that is placed inserted in the jaw. These posts are usually made of medical-grade titanium, which is ideally suited to fusing with human bone. Once it does it forms a solid foundation for the artificial tooth it will support.

Dental implants have been hailed as one of the most important advances in dentistry, and they’re available at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for implants, and for complete cosmetic dentistry. Please call our office to schedule an appointment today!
