Beautiful Teeth Without Breaking The Bank

affordable teeth whitening Daly City

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, our smile makeover patients believe that life-changing cosmetic dentistry is a valuable investment. Indeed, for most people, the value of a healthy, attractive smile cannot be measured in dollars. We agree, however, that cosmetic dentistry is not cheap.

Do you have to spend thousands of dollars to improve your smile? Actually, no. This blog post focuses on the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures.

Dental Bonding
In many cases, dental bonding can be used to repair a tooth that has been chipped.

Bonding involves a pliable resin material that is applied to the tooth to repair chips or cracks, or in some cases fill a cavity.

Teeth Whitening
Most Daly City people are aware that there are several different tooth whitening protocols. We recommend scheduling a tooth whitening consultation to discuss your options. Even inexpensive OTC tooth bleaching systems can be misused and lead to tooth sensitivity, damage to tooth enamel, and irregular coloration.

Regarding the cost of teeth whitening: if you select an at-home system from a drugstore, you may have to buy several packages to achieve even slight whitening. In-office whitening or a take home system from our office may be more cost-effective in the long run.

Cosmetic dentistry from Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City can transform any smile. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to us for sleep apnea treatment. Call to schedule an appointment today!

Soda Spells Double Trouble

Daly City dental financing

Soft drinks, soda, pop. No matter what you call it, it seems to currently be the dietary villain of choice. In this post from Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we give you yet another reason to avoid this ubiquitous drink.

For dental health, soda delivers a double punch of damage with two of its ingredients: sugar and phosphoric acid.

Sugar is dangerous to your teeth primarily because it softens enamel and makes the teeth more prone to decay. This is especially harmful to children because their enamel is not fully developed.

Some people think that they can avoid problems because they choose diet soda. Unfortunately, the acids found in diet soda have basically the same detrimental softening effect on enamel. Soda consumption can also lead to teeth staining.

Our recommendation is simple: stop drinking soda or significantly reduce your soda consumption to improve your dental health. Also, keep your children away from soda as much as possible so that their teeth have the chance to mature healthily.

Can’t kick the habit? Try to drink water shortly after you have soda and brush more (but wait a half hour so the enamel isn’t brushed while it is soft).

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we want all our patients to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health. We offer complete general dentistry. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to us for sleep apnea treatment. Schedule an appointment today!

It’s Better To Prevent A Cavity Than Fill One

how to prevent cavities Daly City

We fill a lot of cavities at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. Tooth decay is a serious problem, with somewhere in the area of nine of every ten American adults having at least one cavity in their teeth.

It doesn’t have to be that way. We really stress preventative dentistry as the key to good dental health. Here are five tips for maintaining healthy teeth and gums:

  • Brush Your Teeth. This is one is easy and basic, but critical. Brush twice a day for at least two minutes, and use a toothpaste with fluoride.
  • Don’t Forget Your Tongue. This important part of brushing is easy to overlook, but there’s bacteria on the tongue you’ll want to remove.
  • Floss. This goes hand-in-hand with brushing. Flossing lets you get the gunk that builds up between teeth. Before or after you brush? Either one. Just be sure to do it!
  • Eat a Balanced Diet. Food choice is more important than you might think. Teeth need nutrients, just like the rest of your body. Avoid sugar as much as possible, and drink plenty of water.
  • Have Regular Check-Ups. Cleanings and checkups allow us to catch small problems before they get big, and give you peace of mind.

By following these five simple tips you can avoid serious dental issues down the road.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we want all our patients to have healthy teeth and gums. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for comprehensive general dentistry, and specialties like sleep apnea treatment. Call us to schedule your next checkup today!

Avoid Sports Injuries: Protect Those Teeth!

sports dentistry Daly City

Did you know that as many as five million teeth get knocked out of peoples’ mouths every single year? Not surprisingly, a lot of those accidents happens on the playing field. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we want to remind everyone how important it is to always wear a protective mouthguard when participating in sports.

That includes so-called non-contact sports like basketball. Even in a friendly game among weekend warriors, it only takes an accidental elbow to the mouth to knock out a tooth.

Needless to say, no one wants to experience that. A knocked out tooth is a serious dental emergency. If it’s treated immediately there is a good chance the tooth can be reinserted. Otherwise, you’re facing expensive dental work.

No parent would send their child onto the playing field without protective gear, like shin pads or a helmet. That gear will vary from sport to sport. What should be there no matter what is a mouthguard.

You can pick up an inexpensive mouthguard online, or at any sporting goods store. They can be ready to use in minutes, and make all the difference if an accident happens.

There are also higher-end, custom mouthguards available. Ask us about them at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for general dentistry, and specialties like dental implants. Schedule an appointment today!

What NOT To Do In A Dental Emergency

emergency dental office Daly City

It’s hard to keep your wits about you during any kind of emergency. That’s why it’s a good idea to know what to do beforehand. Remember we offer emergency dentistry at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City.

Let’s discuss what you should and shouldn’t do if you have an oral emergency.

Broken Tooth

DON’T throw away any tooth fragments.

DON’T wait to see a dentist.

DO rinse mouth with warm water. If the area is bleeding, put a piece of gauze on it (carefully!).

Lost Filling

  • DON’T ignore it.
  • DON’T let food get stuck in the hole.
  • DON’T bite down on the tooth.

Call us to schedule an appointment right away.

Broken Crowns

  • DON’T lose the crown.
  • DON’T use all-purpose or “super” glue to cement it back on the tooth. You can try denture adhesive to keep it in place temporarily until you can get to our office.

Knocked-out Tooth

  • DON’T touch the root of the tooth.
  • DON’T clean off any tissue attached to it.
  • If the tooth gets dirty, DON’T scrub the tooth. You can rinse it gently with warm water.

A knocked out tooth is as serious as dental emergencies get, but it can be successfully re-implanted if done promptly.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City emergency dentistry is one of our most important  services. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay rely on it, along with our complete general dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!

Patient Education Improves Dental Outcomes

Pacifica family dentist

The more you know, the better off you are. That’s a general truth that applies to a lot of things in life, and that includes dentistry. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we want all our patients to be as informed as possible about the procedures they have.

A question that patients bring to us a lot is whether it’s really necessary to have a cleaning and checkup twice a year. In a word, yes. Regular checkups let us keep an eye on your overall dental health, and get ahead of potential problems. It really is true:  prevention is the best medicine.

Indestructable?

Many patients ask how long a filling will last. Some think they’ll last a lifetime, but unfortunately that is not usually the case. Fillings can break down or become loose over time. If that happens, decay can get into the area around it and cause problmes. You can extend the life of a filling with daily brushing and flossing.

What about toothbrushes? Is an electric any better than a manual? This is among the most-asked questions for any dentist. When they are used properly, both do an excellent job. We recommend soft bristles, with mixed bristle heights and angles. They do a better job getting between the teeth.

Patients often ask about toothpaste, too. We recommend one that has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the package. That means it contains fluoride, which strengthens and protects your teeth.

Again, we believe the more you know the better off you are. If you have any questions about a recommended procedure at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, don’t hesitate to ask. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for general dentistry, and specialties like porcelain veneers. And they ask a lot of questions! Schedule your next appointment today.

Two Hints For When You’re Too Tired To Brush

San Mateo gentle dentist

Too tired to touch a toothbrush? We’ve all been there. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we have two quick ideas to overcome your exhaustion and pick up your toothbrush.

Idea #1 Drag Tongue Along Teeth

As you lie there in bed after a long hard day and realize you forgot to brush, drag your tongue over your teeth a few times. As you do, visualize plaque: that filmy stuff on the teeth and gumline. It’s loaded with the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Then jump up and give your mouth just 2 minutes of gentle, thorough cleaning.

Idea #2 Scrutinize the Food You Eat

Another convenient and uncomplicated approach is to pay attention to what’s going into your mouth throughout the day. The higher the sugar content, the sooner the teeth will need a brushing to avoid harm. Swish with water after coffee, tea or soda if brushing isn’t going to happen soon.

Remember that brushing your teeth is an important part of any daily dental health routine. We recommend brushing twice a day, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. We strongly recommend flossing, too.

Be sure to get all over your teeth: the front and the sides, inside and out, and the tops. Use a pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste – or more than pea-sized, if you’d like. Too much toothpaste is no big deal, but be sure to use enough!

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for general and restorative dentistry. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

Inlays/Onlays: Less Invasive Than Complete Crowns

cosmetic dental Daly City

Restorative dentistry has come a long way over the years and there are now several effective ways to repair decayed teeth. In this post from Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we are going to focus on two similar types of restorations: dental inlays and onlays.

Where possible, an inlay or an onlay can be a less invasive replacement for a complete crown and either one is usually more affordable than a porcelain crown procedure.

Inlays/onlays are “indirect fillings,” meaning that they are produced in a lab and placed whole on the tooth. A traditional “direct filling” is applied to the tooth while the material is malleable and then shaped by the dentist.

An inlay is used to correct the surface of a damaged tooth, typically to fill a small cavity or a natural pit that is at risk for decay.

Typically porcelain or composite resin are used for inlays; these materials are strong and look very natural because the color can be matched accurately to the surrounding teeth. An inlay is precisely fitted to your tooth and looks, feels, and functions like the initial tooth.

An onlay covers a larger part of the tooth. Because they cover such a large area of the tooth, they are often referred to as partial crowns. Onlays are commonly applied to the biting surface of the tooth. Just like inlays, they are exactly fitted to the damaged part of the tooth. Composite resin and porcelain are also the main materials used to create an onlay. As mentioned before, inlays and onlays serve a vital role in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we have repaired many smiles with inlays and onlays. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to our practice for complete general dentistry, and for special services like snoring treatment. Call to scheduel an appointment today!

What If My Dental Crown Cracks, Comes Loose, or Comes Off?

what to do if dental crown comes off Daly City

Quite often, people freak out if their dental crown moves or comes off completely. This is understandable, but at Kenneth Hovden DDS in  Daly City we advise remaining cool, calm, and collected.

Here is what to do if your crown comes off.

There are three steps:

1. First things first, find your crown if it has come off completely. If you think you may have unwittingly swallowed it, it’s not the end of the world. This is fairly common. You will need to have a new one made. Whereas the original may be reattached if you find it in your mouth. As long as it’s not damaged.

2. The second thing you need to do is call your dentist. If you’re still going to the same dental practice that originally put it in, they might put it back free of charge. Especially if you got the crown recently.

If you have moved, or don’t currently have a dentist, give us a call. We’ll reattach it for a reasonable rate.

Remember these two important things:

  • Even if we didn’t perform the crown procedure, we can re-attach it for you.
  • If the crown is broken, we can fabricate a replacement crown in one visit.

3. What if your crown comes off after business hours or on the weekend?

You can glue it back on while waiting for an appointment. This will protect the exposed tooth. Remember, the tooth is not as strong as an uncrowned tooth.

To reattach it, we recommend using denture adhesive. You can find it at a drugstore.

Follow the directions on the adhesive. To be certain it sets, softly bite down on the crown while the adhesive is still wet. Be extra careful while waiting for your appointment. Eat soft foods so you don’t damage the tooth.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we place dental crowns every day. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for complete general dentistry. Schedule an appointment today!
