Foaming At The Mouth: Are You Brushing Right?

Daly City affordable family dentist

In this post from Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we explore some specifics about brushing your teeth. One key to getting the most out of your toothpaste is getting plenty of foam when brushing.

Working up a good foam is brought about by pre-wetting the toothbrush, then brushing at a 45 degree angle. The foam helps dislodge food debris from nooks and crannies in the mouth. Go ahead and swish it around as you finish brushing to pick up any stragglers.

The abrasives in toothpaste are designed to polish the teeth without damaging the enamel. Because of the abrasives, soft toothbrushes are best. Harder bristles can put the enamel and gum line at risk.

The fluoride in the toothpaste promotes remineralization of your teeth. This takes time, so be certain you brush for at least 2-3 minutes, and get the foam throughout your mouth.

Flossing is an important part of cleaning your teeth. It doesn’t matter whether your floss before or after brushing. There are different types of floss available and they’re all effective. We do, however, recommend string floss over floss holders, because with string floss you can get all around individual teeth.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we want all our patients to brush and floss twice a day. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay trust us with their dental health by scheduling twice a year checkups. Our services include dental implants, complete general dentistry, and much more. Set up an appointment today!

3 Reliable Steps To Find The Best Daly City, California Dentist

Daly City affordable family dentist

Looking for a new dentist? Maybe you’re new in town, or maybe you’re just looking for a change. Whatever the reason, Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City has some suggestions you may find useful.

It isn’t a decision you want to make lightly. Ideally you should establish a relationship that you can count on for years to come. Asking your family and friends is a tried-and-true method, but since that’s one of the first things you’re likely to think of, we’ll share a few other ideas.

  1. If you’re moving, ask your current dentist for a recommendation in your new town.
  2. Ask your physician
  3. Try the local or state dental society.

Establish a short list of potential new dentists. From there, call or visit each one before making up your mind. Be sure to read online reviews, too, to see what others in your town have to say.

Considerations

Keep the following in mind:

  1. Does a practice take your insurance? Even if they are out of your network, a practice may submit claims to all insurance providers. Be sure to ask.
  2. Where is the office? You know what real estate agents say: location, location, location! Make sure the office is conveniently located. That may mean they are close to your job. Don’t forget to find out their office hours.
  3. Specialties. Not all practices perform every dental procedure. Some may not extract wisdom teeth, while others may not offer dental sedation. Learn as much as you can before committing to anything.

At name of practice we are committed to excellence in dentistry. People from xxx come to our practice for xxx. Please call us to schedule an appointment today!

Treatment For Stress-Induced Jaw Pain

Treatment For Stress Induced Jaw Pain In Daly City

Everyday stress can cause some people to clench their jaw or grind their teeth. This in turn can aggravate or even lead to TMJ disorder, which is treatable at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City.

The temporomandibular joints are the muscles, tendons, and bones that connect the jaw to the skull.  They’re among the most complex in the human body. Usually shortened to “TMJ,” they are frequently associated with serious pain.

TMJ Pain

TMJ pain can result from stress, from an injury, or from inflammation. It can be on either side of the jaw and may seem to come out of nowhere. When it occurs it can be painful to bite or chew, or even to talk.

In addition to pain, you may notice:

  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Swelling on the sides of the face
  • Headaches
  • Ear pain
  • Stiff or sore jaw muscles

What To Do?

If you suspect your jaw pain is TMJ disorder, you can find short-term relief using ice packs on the affected area. Over-the-counter pain relievers are also good.

You can also choose softer foods, don’t chew gum, and try massaging the area that hurts.

For the longer term, consider a professional diagnosis and treatment, like what we provide at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. We have treated patients throughout San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay, who also come to us for restorative dentistry and much more. Call us to schedule an appointment today!

Periodontal Disease Is Linked To Systemic Diseases

gum disease treatment Daly City

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Nearly half of Americans over the age of thirty have gum disease in some form. Fortunately, it’s a treatable condition at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City.

What do your gums do?

Gum tissue has an important job. It protects the roots of your teeth and provides a barrier for the connective tissues and ligaments that hold your teeth in their sockets. It also protects the alveolar bone in which your teeth are anchored.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is inflammation and infection of this soft tissue. It starts with inflammation. Gums become swollen and tender. Early stage gum disease is called gingivitis. If it progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, developing pockets. This more severe condition is called periodontitis or periodontal disease.

Signs of gum disease include:

  • Swollen gums
  • Receding gums
  • A change in the color of gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Changes in your bite

As serious as gum disease is on its own, it also puts you at risk of conditions like heart disease. The good news is that gum disease is 100% preventable with regular brushing and flossing, and dental checkups.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we treat gum disease. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay come to us for complete general and cosmetic dentistry. Please call to schedule your next checkup today!

Daly City Wants Silver Screen Smiles

San Francisco Wants Silver Screen Smiles

A smile makeover is all about using cosmetic dentistry procedures to make positive changes to your teeth. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we can combine two or more of these procedures to upgrade your smile.

The effects of a smile makeover may be subtle, or they may be quite dramatic, like what you’d see on a movie star. We can make changes to the color of your teeth, close gaps, fix chips or cracks, or re-shape gum tissue. Since it addresses aspects you dislike, you can think of it as a customized smile.

The procedures include:

  • Porcelain veneers
  • Bonding
  • Dental implants
  • Teeth whitening

Porcelain veneers are thin layers of medical-grade ceramic that are attached to the front of the teeth. They can be used to cover gaps, chips, and stains.

Bonding involves using a composite resin to repair decay, chips, or fractures. It can also be used to make teeth seem longer. The color of the resin matches that of your teeth.

Dental implants have been hailed as one of the great advances in the history of dentistry. A titanium post is inserted into the jaw, and in time fuses with the bone. An artificial tooth is fitted on top of that, and it looks and functions like a natural tooth. Implants can also anchor a set of dentures.

Teeth whitening. Everyone wants whiter teeth, and teeth whitening is one of the most in-demand cosmetic dentistry procedures there is. Professional whitening surpasses any over-the-counter product you can find.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we’ll customize a treatment plan that gets you the smile you’ve always wanted. We’ve used cosmetic dentistry to improve the smiles of patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay. We also offer complete restorative dentistry services, and much more. Extraction Is Not The End Game

dental implants https://cosmeticimplantdentistryca.com/services.php

Have you had a tooth extracted? You may be left with a gap in your smile. Unsightly as that may be, there is  more than the issue of appearance. At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we can address that with a state-of-the-art dental implant.

Problems With Extracted Teeth

After a tooth is extracted, the bone surrounding the extraction site shrinks and recedes. This happens because there is no longer a tooth root requiring a blood supply, and the bone reacts accordingly.

People who have had numerous teeth extracted from the upper palate eventually develop a sunken-in look because they lose a significant portion of their jawbone. Another issue is that the missing tooth may cause the surrounding teeth to shift.

The Best Solution

Fortunately, there is a procedure that will prevent these issues. A dental implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the jaw bone where the tooth root used to be. An artificial tooth goes on top of the implant.

The result is a permanent, natural-looking restoration that gives you back your smile while retaining the healthy bone and gum tissue at the tooth site.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we provide dental implants to restore extracted teeth while preventing additional dental problems. Patients from
San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay also come to our practice for general dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!

Dental Confidence Or Caution

Half Moon Bay cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Whether you are one of those who goes willingly to the dentist or are hesitant about getting work done, the team at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City wants you to make and keep regular appointments for cleanings and checkups.

Regular dental appointments are important because they help keep your teeth and gums healthy. For most patients, we recommend a visit to our office every six months. We occasionally need to see a patient more often.

Appointments, Parts 1 & 2

There are two parts to a typical dental appointment: a cleaning and a checkup.

During a cleaning, one of our dental hygienists inspects your teeth and gums, and uses special tools to remove any plaque and tartar that have built up. It also includes polishing your teeth, which removes any surface stains. The last step is flossing.

During a checkup, the dentist checks your overall dental health. If there are any issues, like a cavity or signs of gum disease, we’ll usually schedule a follow-up appointment. It will be planned for your convenience, of course, but sooner is better.

What you do between your six-month visits is really important. Plaque is contantly forming on the teeth, so we recommend – and we cannot say it strongly enough! – that you brush and floss your teeth every day. Ideally, you’ll do it twice.

You have a lot of toothpaste choices. The flavor is up to you, but be sure to choose one with fluoride.

By seeing Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City twice a year and maintaining a good dental health regimen at home, you can have confidence that your teeth and gums are in great shape. Patients from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay from to us for general and cosmetic dentistry. If you haven’t already, schedule your next appointment today!

Tooth Sensitivity Treatment At Kenneth Hovden DDS

Tooth Sensitivity Treatment in Daly City

There are lots of people out there who feel pain when they sip coffee or eat ice cream, or take a bite out of something hard. If sensitive teeth are a problem for you, talk to us about it at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City.

In many cases, sensitive teeth respond to something as simple as changing toothpaste. Most major toothpaste brands have a sensitive teeth version of their products. They can be very effective; many patients say they’ve helped within a week or so of use.

A possible cause of sensitivity is receding gums, which exposes microscopic holes in the teeth. When that happens, food and drinks that are hot or cold reach nerve cells that cause pain. We can evaluate the state of your gums, and whether something like the way you brush your teeth is a contributing factor.

There could also be a worn filling or new cavity. Treatment for that is as simple as replacing a worn one or filling the new cavity.

The important thing is to let us know what’s going on, at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. People from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay count on our complete general dentistry, and for services like sleep apnea treatment. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

Think You Know How To Brush? Think Again.

Daly City tooth brushing tips

You’ve been doing it since you were five. You switch to autopilot morning and night and get it over with. But at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we have a question: are you doing it right?

We ask this in all seriousness. There is always room for improvement, even in something as basic as brushing your teeth.

Essential Dental Health

Brushing, after all, is an important part of any daily dental health routine. We recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. We strongly recommend flossing, too. Before or after you brush? The jury remains out on that one. We think before is better, but the most important thing is that you do it.

Be sure to get all over your teeth: the front and the sides, inside and out, and the tops. When you do the sides, be sure you brush along the gumline. Use a gentle touch, and hold the brush at a 45-degree angle.

As you do the front and side surfaces, move the brush in gentle, circular strokes.

Toothpaste

Use a pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste – or more than pea-sized, if you’re so inclined. Too much toothpaste is no big deal, but be sure to use enough.

Be sure the head of the toothbrush isn’t too big, especially if you have a smaller mouth. It needs to fit easily between your cheeks and gums. The handle is less important. Make sure it feels comfortable in your hand. Replace your toothbrush every three months, if not more often.

Tooth Massage

Plaque is soft and loose, so you don’t have to scrub very hard to remove it. Think of it not so much as brushing, but massaging your teeth and gums. With that in mind you should you be able to keep that light touch.

Finally, brush for at least two minutes. If you’re running late, and are tempted to cut it short, resist. If it helps, use a stopwatch. You’ve probably got one on your smart phone.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. Our patients come from San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay for complete general and cosmetic dentistry services. Schedule your next checkup with us today.
