At Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, we often see patients who have been struggling with inadequate sleep for months or even years. Some of these individuals end up being diagnosed with sleep apnea or related conditions.
You Can’t Just “Tough It Out”
Sleep apnea is a condition in which someone stops breathing repeatedly through the night. The stoppage may only be a few seconds, or it could go on for a minute or more. It deprives the brain of oxygen, and that’s a serious matter.
Sleep apnea happens most often in overweight men in their forties, but anyone at any age might get it. One of its symptoms is snoring.
The reluctance to request professional help is lamentable, because it takes such a high toll on their health and reduces their quality of life. If they are keeping someone up at night, it makes life more difficult for that person, as well.
Protect Your Health
For some odd reason, many people don’t consider sleep apnea a pressing issue. Why the disconnect? We are talking about breathing, folks! There isn’t a biological activity more fundamental than that. And inadequate sleep can cause a host of serious health issues. It also affects performance in every area of life; work, leisure pursuits, and social settings.
There are several types of sleep apnea:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Cause: Throat muscles loosen and block the airway. This is the most prevalent type.
Central Sleep Apnea
Cause: The brain doesn’t send signals to the muscles that regulate breathing.
Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome (Treatment-emergent Central Sleep Apnea)
This is a combination of both conditions described previously.
