Beautifying With Bonding

Daly City fix chipped tooth

A cosmetic dentist’s toolkit is filled with handy tools for fixing most types of cosmetic tooth problems. In the past few years, porcelain veneers, dental implants, and same-day teeth whitening have attracted a lot of attention. In today’s post, we are going to talk about an effective, yet relatively uncelebrated dental treatment that has been used successfully for decades. We’re talking about dental bonding.

The dental bonding procedure uses a resin material that is strong and natural looking. It is applied to the teeth while soft and putty-like, and then hardened (or cured) with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth and can then be shaped and polished.

Dentists use bonding to fix tooth troubles caused by decay, chips, or cracks. Large spaces between healthy teeth can be filled with bonding material, and bonding can protect tooth roots if the gums have loosened.

Discolored teeth can also be lightened with bonding. Since bonding material is easily molded, teeth can be lengthened or re-shaped to more pleasing proportions. Bonding is usually used as part of a total smile makeover.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden, of Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. My practice, Kenneth Hovden DDS, offers TMJ treatment, Lumineers, restorative dentistry, Invisalign, and sleep apnea and snoring.

Is Your Low-Carb Diet Giving You Dragon Breath?

bad breath treatment San Francisco

Many men and women mistakenly believe that all bad breath is linked to substandard brushing. The truth is that there are myriad causes of halitosis. Your dentist in Daly City can help you discover the cause of your problem and discuss how to cure bad breath.

Your diet greatly impacts your breath. Because foods begin to be digested the second they enter your mouth, and because they are absorbed and distributed throughout the body, you probably will be able to smell strong-smelling foods like onions and garlic long after you’ve eaten them.

Therefore, using a mouthwash will only mask the smell. Constantly sucking on breath mints is also not smart. This may bring additional oral problems—especially if the mints have sugar. If you want real relief, you may need to avoid the strong foods altogether.

Moreover, many dieters find that their diet regimen is making it harder to keep their mouth fresh and clean. Low-carb and no-carb diets promote fat burning, but the side effect of bad breath can be caused by the chemicals released during this process. Increasing water intake can help alleviate this.

Lastly, flossing regularly is often the key to truly fresh breath. Many people don’t realize how much food can be stuck between their teeth, and this food can cause halitosis if it isn’t removed. More importantly, the food particles turn into plaque which can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden of
Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. My practice provides general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry to residents in the San Francisco area. I am dedicated to prime oral health for all of my patients, and that includes fresh breath. I also want them to love their smile, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover or other cosmetic dental services, give us a call at 650-755-6000.

Know The Facts About Oral Piercings

health risks of oral piercings Daly City

Body piercings are a common form of self-expression seen around San Francisco. Today’s post is for those who currently have an oral piercing or are considering one.

Since this is a cosmetic dentistry dental blog, I am sure you expect us to raise all sorts of alarms warning of the dangers of piercings. You are right. Unfortunately, these piercings and the jewelry they accommodate can lead to serious issues with not only your teeth and mouth, but your entire body. These piercings can cause tooth damage, cavities, periodontal disease, tooth loss, bone recession, compromised immune system function and, in rare cases, death.

In general, any oral piercing is going to open you up to an array of dangerous oral infections and complications. The mouth is full of germs and introducing foreign objects permanently is not natural for your body’s health.

A tongue piercing can cause difficulty chewing with unnatural chewing patterns that may lead to swallowing problems. The jewelry produces excess saliva from the salivary glands, which throws off the natural balance of your oral cavity. Permanent nerve weakening, excessive bleeding, and allergic reactions can also occur.

Metal jewelry also can easily come in contact with your teeth, leading to cracked, chipped, or damaged teeth. Your teeth are built to last a lifetime. Chips, cracks, and enamel erosion compromise their durability and shorten their life span.

Complications with some piercings occur by the introduction of hepatitis and herpes simplex viruses, and even more complications have occurred with bacteria entering the bloodstream and eventually lodging in the heart valve. In rare cases, such infections are fatal.

Though not technically a piercing, some California people drill small holes in their teeth to place rhinestones or other jewelry. Drilling into a tooth is detrimental for many reasons, including damage that can make a root canal necessary. The jewel also can attract bacteria that can directly go into the drilled cavity of the tooth.

Dr. Hovden encourages patients with oral piercings to remove their jewelry before it puts their health at risk. However, if you have an oral piercing and plan to keep it, we advise you to have consistent dental cleanings and check-ups at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. We will set up a schedule for regular visits so we can discover and repair problems in their early stages before they become more acute or require emergency dental care. Do not wait if you suspect you may have a dental or physical trouble. Call 650-755-6000 ASAP.

How Can You Improve Your Smile Quickly?

Porcelain Veneers With porcelain veneers, you can revamp your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Porcelain veneers are glass-like, wafer-thin covers that are attached to the front of your teeth. Porcelain has been used in dentistry for many years because no other restorative material is such an excellent match for natural tooth enamel. Porcelain is translucent and can be matched to the color of any tooth. It is stronger than enamel and resists stains.

Dental ceramists who fabricate porcelain veneers are both artists and technicians. They create beautiful paper-thin wafers that adhere to teeth, correcting chips and stains. Porcelain veneers can also straighten crooked teeth for patients who don’t need orthodontic work.

Patients who receive porcelain veneers appreciate the less-invasive process of enhancing their smile. Newer techniques require no removal of healthy tooth enamel.

We would be happy to show you what veneers can do for your smile.

Do You Have Sore Gums?

Every San Francisco dentistry patient’s mouth provides a cozy home for over 600 types of bacteria. If you are diligent about oral hygiene and have healthy gums, these microbes usually don’t affect your health. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause problems.

Gingivitis is the term for the mild gum disease. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we routinely discover gingivitis in our Daly City, San Francisco, and San Mateo clients who are not even aware they have the condition.

The first signs of gingivitis are swollen, sore gums.

It is important for our dental patients to understand that it is not normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed or flossed. If you haven’t had an oral examination in a while and live in the San Francisco area, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000. Dr. Kenneth Hovden thoroughly exams teeth and gums and takes time to discuss the results and recommendations with each patient.

Children’s Cavities Are Not ‘Just A Part Of Growing Up’

Children's Cavities Are Not 'Just A Part Of Growing Up'

Today’s dental blog focuses on a preventative treatment often used to help impede the development of cavities in children.

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Half Moon Bay children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. San Francisco family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Daly City parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Pacifica area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten!

It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early for their toddlers and young children. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we take special care of our young Daly City dental patients. We want each child’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. We advise parents on the specific dental issues associated with each stage of childhood. Ask us about fluoride, sports mouthguards, and orthodontic treatment.

I am Kenneth Hovden of Kenneth Hovden DDS. I don’t believe that childhood cavities are unavoidable. Call my office at 650-755-6000 to schedule a Daly City dental exam.

The Tea and Teeth Question

Daly City teeth bleaching best price

What do you call a dentist who doesn’t like tea?
Why, Denis, of course.

Joking aside, a common concern for Half Moon Bay patients can be stained teeth. I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden here at Kenneth Hovden DDS. Today, let’s talk a little bit about a common cause of tooth staining: dark beverages including tea.

Over time tea can stain the plaque that may eventually turn into tartar. Plaque can be brushed and flossed away. Thorough daily rituals of oral cleaning are valuable for this. Tartar (which forms if the plaque remains on the teeth for over 24 hours) on the other hand will need to be removed in office during a teeth cleaning appointment. Either way, between cleanings a wise method for avoiding tea staining is to rinse with water after drinking tea or to eat something and then to be sure to brush and floss all surfaces of the teeth at the end of the day.

If after an in-house cleaning the color of your teeth is still unsatisfactory, teeth whitening is always an option. Our practice offers many smile enhancing opportunities. You decide on the problem, come see us, and together we’ll settle on the solution.
