Our Daly City Dental Team Takes Care Of You

Daly City Dental Team

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, each dental professional on our team allows our practice to operate smoothly and provide the highest caliber of dental care. Today’s Daly City dentistry article will focus on the duties of a dental assistant.

You probably think of the dental assistant as: “The one who suctions my mouth while the dentist is working on me,” or “The one who attaches the bib around my neck,” and you are correct. However, his/her knowledge of patient care and dental lab procedures is probably more extensive than you realize.

Competent dental assistants work behind the scenes at Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. They assist Dr. Kenneth Hovden during all dental procedures including basic oral examinations, tooth prep, and cavity filling, as well as lengthy smile makeovers involving multiple procedures. Our competent assistants also work with our dental hygienists during dental cleanings and patient instruction.

When a dental patient arrives for his/her appointment, the dental assistant has already been preparing for the visit. Before he/she is escorted to a comfortable chair in one of our pleasant patient rooms, the assistant has made sure the room is ready for the particular treatment being performed.

Whether the patient is receiving porcelain veneers, having their teeth whitened, undergoing a routine orthodontia adjustment, or settling in for a two-hour smile redesign with oral sedation, the dental assistant has set the stage for a comfortable and efficient procedure.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, infection control is always foremost in our minds. Our dental assistants, dentists, and hygienists are vigilant about the sterilization of dental instruments and follow strict infection control protocols. The health of our patients and employees is our highest priority.

Dental assistants in San Francisco dental offices may also prepare tray setups, make impressions for restorations, schedule appointments, take x-rays, and maintain and retrieve patient records. They must have a keen eye for detail and an excellent memory as they organize and stock the many different dental supplies in a typical office.

Kenneth Hovden DDS is located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City, California. We provide general and cosmetic dental procedures including porcelain veneers and dental implants. You can read more about our services at https://www.cosmeticimplantdentistryca.com/dental-services/.

San Francisco Mouths And Stomatitis

Let Your Dentist Near San Francisco Solve Your Mouth Sore Problems

Ouch! The mouth is not a fun place for injuries, sores, or inflammation. It seems that even the smallest irritation in the mouth can cause serious discomfort for Daly City dental patients.

These non-specific irritations in the mouth have a name. They are called stomatitis.

A good general definition for stomatitis is the inflammation of the membranes in the mouth. These usually affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, and even get to sleep at night. If you suffer from mouth sores, you know that stomatitis can really impact the lives of San Mateo, San Francisco, and Daly City residents.

Some common causes of stomatitis can be canker sores or cold sores, gum disease, biting the inside of your mouth or your tongue, burning your mouth, and irritation caused by braces or broken teeth. Many sores in the mouth will generally clear up on their own in less than two weeks.

However, your San Francisco dentist can determine if it is caused by a viral or bacterial infection, and they can also advise you on treating the symptoms of stomatitis with pain relievers and at-home remedies such as salt water rinses.

Hi. I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden of Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City, and I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about smile makeovers, give us a call at 650-755-6000.

Teeth: What Have They Done For You Lately?

San Francisco Cosmetic Dentistry

Welcome to the San Francisco dental blog! Today we are going to look at the secret life of our teeth.

The shape of each tooth gives a clue to what it does. The incisors, or your front teeth, are sharp. They need to be because they are there to cut food and their curvature helps move food inside the mouth.

Behind the incisors, you find the canine teeth. Their roots go far into the jaw bone because they are designed to hold onto food and tear through it.

Premolars, found just behind the canines, are flat on the surface. This allows them to crush your food as you chew. And, finally, in the very back are the molars. They are large and have nice, flat chewing surfaces that help them to grind food down into smaller, more digestible pieces.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden, a local Daly City dentist, and I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little more about the different teeth in your mouth.

Healthy Teeth and Your San Francisco Diet

San Francisco Beautify Your Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry Maintaining healthy teeth is an important concern for our local San Francisco residents. As your dentist, it’s my job to help you understand how to care for your teeth and to keep them healthy. Everyone in San Francisco knows that maintaining healthy teeth requires regular daily brushing and flossing. Regular visits to your local San Francisco dental practice is also necessary to keep watch for cavities and to help you maintain proper dental hygiene. We often forget that maintaining a healthy diet can also be beneficial for the health of your teeth.

A San Francisco diet that includes foods that help your muscles and bones will also help you develop healthy gums and healthy teeth. Examples of local San Francisco foods to include in your diet include foods rich in vitamin B such as breads and cereals. Foods rich in vitamin C, usually fruits and vegetables, help improve the health of your gums. Zinc and magnesium are also good for the health of your teeth and are found in foods like lean beef, fish, and poultry.

All foods increase the production of saliva. Saliva is important to healthy teeth because it helps to maintain the pH balance in your mouth. Maintaining this balance helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Foods high in fiber also encourage saliva production as does the chewing of sugar-free gum. Gum, however, can damage unhealthy teeth or pull out dental fillings, so always use caution when deciding whether to chew gum and which brand to chew.

Just as certain diet choices in the San Francisco area can be beneficial to the health of your teeth, others can be detrimental. Foods and drinks that are high in sugars are more likely to form the acids that attack your teeth and result in decay, leading to the need for dental crowns and fillings. And while table sugar is often associated with the formation of cavities, other sugars such as glucose, fructose, and maltose are also causes, and are often found in juices and sodas. Limiting the consumption of sugars to mealtimes lessens the amount of time your healthy teeth are exposed.

Making good diet choices and limiting between meal sugar consumption can improve the health of your teeth and gums.

If you would like to learn how to better care for your healthy teeth in the San Francisco area, contact Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry.  If you are interested in improving your smile with teeth whitening or porcelain veneers we also provide those services. Please call. We would love to hear from you.

A New Reason To Eat More Fish In San Francisco

Your San Francisco Dentist Offers Dental Health And Diet Ideas Hello San Francisco cosmetic dental blog visitors, welcome to the Kenneth Hovden DDS blog. I am Dr. Kenneth Hovden.

I came across an interesting dental article on the Web MD Health News site the other day. The article is entitled ‘Fatty Fish, Nuts May Prevent Gum Disease.’ Author Jennifer Warner explains that a recent study links diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with a lower risk of periodontitis.

Gum disease is a common dental issue for many San Francisco area folks. When gum tissue pulls away from a tooth, it forms a pocket. (You know what they say about Nature abhorring a vacuum.) This pocket is a warm, moist place for bacteria to flourish. If periodontitis goes untreated, the tooth and jaw bone are at risk. During dental examinations, I carefully measure gumline pockets and examine all teeth for gum disease.

“Researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFAs were as much as 30 percent less likely to have gum disease than those who ate little or none of this type of fat.”

Foods high in PUFAs include salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines, herring. Oils high in PUFAs include safflower oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and margarines made with the previously mentioned oils. Almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds are high PUFA nuts/seeds.

I don’t know many families in the Daly City area that regularly eat mackerel and herring. Maybe some of us could benefit from becoming more adventurous when it comes to seafood.

The possible prevention of gum disease is not the only reason to eat high PUFA foods. These foods pack a nutritional punch and have myriad health benefits. The next time you are stocking up at Costco, you may want to add some salmon and walnuts to your list.

It is important to understand that diet alone will not treat or prevent gum disease, however it may be an additional tool for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

If you have not been to your San Francisco dentist in a while, I urge you to schedule an examination and cleaning today. We are currently taking new San Francisco area cosmetic and restorative dentistry clients at Kenneth Hovden DDS.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, smile makeovers, tooth-colored fillings or invisible braces, call us today to schedule an appointment.
