Do You Have Sore Gums?

Every San Francisco dentistry patient’s mouth provides a cozy home for over 600 types of bacteria. If you are diligent about oral hygiene and have healthy gums, these microbes usually don’t affect your health. However, if you have gum disease, bacteria can enter your bloodstream through your gums and cause problems.

Gingivitis is the term for the mild gum disease. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we routinely discover gingivitis in our Daly City, San Francisco, and San Mateo clients who are not even aware they have the condition.

The first signs of gingivitis are swollen, sore gums.

It is important for our dental patients to understand that it is not normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed or flossed. If you haven’t had an oral examination in a while and live in the San Francisco area, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000. Dr. Kenneth Hovden thoroughly exams teeth and gums and takes time to discuss the results and recommendations with each patient.

Kenneth Hovden DDS is a full-service dental practice at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City. We provide comprehensive general and cosmetic dentistry for clients who live in Daly City and the nearby communities of San Mateo and San Francisco.

During your dentist consultation, we can discuss any cosmetic or restorative procedures in which you are interested. Some of the procedures that we use to create perfect smiles are porcelain veneers, orthodontics, dental implants and tooth bleaching. Our hygienists are skilled professionals who perform the ultimate in dental deep-cleanings.

Oral health and overall health go hand in hand. Schedule a dental consultation today by calling 650-755-6000 or visiting us online at http://cosmeticimplantdentistryca.com/.

Quirky Dental Facts That May Surprise You

San Mateo cosmetic dental and tooth implants

In today’s Kenneth Hovden DDS post, we share some fun facts about dentistry. Enjoy!

Many dental patients are aware that before there was formal dental training and licensing, barbers often performed dental procedures. But did you know that blacksmiths also moonlighted as dentists?1 How would you like your dental visit to involve tools used to hammer hot metal?
The Mayans were accomplished cosmetic dentists. One smile style in Mayan culture was bejeweled teeth – a procedure that involved the drilling of holes to embed precious gems. That’s a grill with major bling! 1
The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. That is enough to fill up two swimming pools.2 (Not a very pleasant image, right?)
Nylon toothbrush bristles weren’t introduced until 1938. Prior to that, pig hair was a common bristle material.3 (“Mom, my toothbrush smells like bacon!”)
A popular toothache treatment in medieval Germany was to kiss a donkey.3 There is no evidence that it actually worked and it is unknown if the same remedy was used by donkeys.
Every person’s tongue is unique – just like a fingerprint.4
In medieval Japan, black teeth were considered appealing. Style-conscious women used roots to stain their teeth.3

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, you won’t find pig hair, donkeys, or anvils. You will find quality dental care and our professional team of dental professionals. Our menu of services includes: restorative dentistry, sleep apnea and snoring, and TMJ treatment. Contact Kenneth Hovden DDS today at 650-755-6000 to schedule an informative consultation.

Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Most Daly City adults have been warned about the physical effects of stress. Our doctors remind us to protect ourselves from the dangers of unmanaged stress by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting adequate sleep.

We know that we shouldn’t try to relieve stress with overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or compulsive spending. (Even though many of us are guilty!)

Stress that is not sensibly managed can affect the heart, nervous system, immune system, and digestive system. It can also affect – you guessed it – your teeth.

The obvious risks to oral health are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and the overconsumption of sugary foods. But did you know that stress can increase plaque production, trigger canker sores and increase the risk of periodontal disease? Another problem is that when people are under excessive stress, they often neglect basic oral hygiene.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment with Kenneth Hovden at Kenneth Hovden DDS today. We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dental services including restorative dentistry, sleep apnea and snoring, TMJ treatment, and Invisalign.

It’s ironic, but for some Daly City residents, dental visits cause major anxiety. What if the thought of visiting a dentist sends your blood pressure through the roof? Talk to us about sedation dentistry.

Relax. We can help you get the dental treatment you need.

10 Terrific Tooth Tips From Kenneth Hovden DDS

cost of dental crowns San Francisco

1. If you have kids and your municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, talk to your pediatrician about fluoride supplements. Fluoride strengthens both the teeth you can see and the ones still forming in the jaw.
2. Set a timer when you brush to make sure you spend at least two minutes thoroughly (but gently!) cleaning all surfaces. Don’t forget your tongue – it provides a cozy home for bacteria to flourish.
3. Floss before you brush so that tooth bristles can better reach between teeth.
4. If you can’t brush after a meal, chew some sugarless gum with xylitol. Xylitol may curb the growth of bacteria on your teeth to reduce plaque formation.
5. Eat carbohydrates with meals instead of alone as snacks. More saliva is generated while eating a meal and this can lessen the effects of carbs sitting on your teeth.
6. An oral fluoride rinse used right before bedtime adds an extra measure of decay deterrence. Fluoride rinses (not traditional mouthwash) work best when swished over teeth for at least thirty seconds after flossing and brushing. After spitting it out, don’t rinse with water. Let the residue protect and strengthen your enamel all night long. This is especially important for kids – just make sure they don’t swallow it.
7. If you have diabetes, it is important to understand that unhealthy blood sugar levels can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Your dentist can help you maintain oral health in spite of your condition. If you have already experienced dental complications related to diabetes, schedule a consultation with Kenneth Hovden by calling 650-755-6000.
8. Beware of the dental risks of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia). Continual saliva production is essential for keeping the mouth lubricated, washing the food from tooth surfaces, and neutralizing the acid caused by plaque. Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers are some of the medications that can cause dry mouth. Kenneth Hovden can help you protect your teeth if you live with this unpleasant condition.
9. Wearing a mouthguard when you participate in sports can prevent tooth injury. Many Daly City dentists offer custom mouthguards that fit perfectly.
10. If you are looking for an excellent dentist in the Daly City area, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Kenneth Hovden at Kenneth Hovden DDS. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we provide gentle, quality care for children and adults. Talk to us about preventative, restorative, cosmetic, or children’s dentistry. We look forward to serving you.

“Don’t Take Stress Out On Your Teeth, Daly City”

Hello, I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden. At my Daly City practice I have noticed more and more of my patients coming in with stress-related dental issues. Daly City men and women may not think about it, but stress can do a number on your oral health.

Mouth sores, clenching and grinding, periodontal disease, and poor oral hygiene can all be exacerbated by stress.

Daly City people who have difficulty managing stress need to realize that it can increase the risk of getting mouth sores such as cankers and cold sores. Most canker sores only last 7-10 days, but for relief from the irritation, we recommend our patients pick up an over-the-counter topical anesthetic at any Daly City drug store.

Clenching and grinding the teeth is common for stressed-out Daly City residents, and often it’s done unconsciously. Here at Kenneth Hovden DDS our professional staff can determine if a night guard or other dental appliance is appropriate to reduce grinding.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is exacerbated by stress because stress can result in an increase in dental plaque.

Daly City dental patients may find that when they are under stress it is more common to neglect their oral hygiene habits. Many people in the San Mateo, Daly City and San Francisco areas find that they eat more sugary snacks when they’re under stress.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment at Kenneth Hovden DDS today. We treat patients from age 18 to 75 and we offer restorative dentistry, sleep apnea and snoring treatment, TMJ treatment, and Invisalign. We hope to hear from you soon!

Toothbrush Wars in San Francisco

It may surprise you to know that some San Francisco people have very strong opinions about which type of toothbrush is the best: manual or electric. Is there really one that is clearly better? Most Daly City cosmetic dentists will tell you that all toothbrushes, when used correctly, are effective in removing plaque and that choosing which kind you like is really up to you.

Today in the Daly City dental blog we want to give you some extra information about toothbrushes to help you decide which kind is right for you or your child.

Cost and convenience should be considered.
Some San Francisco people argue that even though electric toothbrushes cost more, you’ll save on dental bills. However, there are no definitive studies to back up this claim.

Manual toothbrushes are easy to find, whereas not all drugstores in the San Mateo, Daly City, and San Francisco area carry all types of electric toothbrushes. This can be difficult when buying replacement heads. People who travel may find that a smaller, manual toothbrush is easier to pack (and you don’t have to remember batteries).

The pressure you put on your gums with either type of toothbrush is important. Some San Francisco residents say that it’s difficult to know how much pressure they use with electric toothbrushes, while others say that because of the quick electrical movements, they tend to be more gentle on their gums than when they use manual brushes. You may want to try them both to see what your brushing style is and discuss it with your San Francisco dentist.

Special consideration should be taken for people with arthritis. Most Daly City area dentists advise their elderly and arthritic patients to use electric toothbrushes when their manual dexterity is diminished. As for children, once they are old enough, an electric toothbrush may be preferable, but safety should always be the first concern for San Francisco parents. Also, all dentists in the San Francisco and surrounding areas will remind you to look for the ADA seal on any dental product you buy.

Whichever type of toothbrush you choose, make sure you get soft bristles and replace it every three to four months.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden and I want to thank you for visiting my Daly City dental blog.

“Soft, Medium, or Buzz Lightyear?”

Choosing Toothbrushes With Your Daly City Dentist At Kenneth Hovden DDS, Dr. Hovden is often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush in Daly City can be as difficult as choosing a paint color, and there seems to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of your local San Mateo grocery store or San Francisco Walmart lately, you know what I am talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up.

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes freshen your breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you choose?

One key factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can damage your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to clean plague, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having dental work or oral surgery done in San Francisco, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, make sure you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When buying a toothbrush for your child, make sure the brush feels comfortable in their hand. If the size and angle feel awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized toothbrush. Some San Francisco kids can manage an adult-size brush better than a short, narrow child-size brush. If you are unsure, ask your Daly City dentist at Kenneth Hovden DDS.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some Daly City folks like the feeling of vibrating bristles or a mini-squirt gun blasting away at the plaque. San Francisco residents with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off of hands and arm muscles.

Is your toothbrush doing the job? Schedule an exam with your Daly City dentist at Kenneth Hovden DDS.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, our professional dental hygienists instruct our Daly City pediatric clients and San Francisco adult patients on proper brushing and flossing. If you haven’t experienced a dental deep cleaning at Kenneth Hovden DDS, you don’t know how clean your teeth and gums can feel.

Schedule a thorough dental cleaning today by calling Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000. An outstanding feature of Kenneth Hovden DDS is commitment to excellence. We offer cosmetic dentistry and a full spectrum of restorative dental procedures.
