What To Do In Case Of A Dental Emergency

Daly City Dental Emergencies Many Daly City residents will experience at least one tooth emergency in their life. You could break a tooth playing a sport, accidentally dislodge a dental crown, experience sudden pain caused by an abscess or break a wire on your braces. In the case of a dental emergency, it is vital to see your Daly City dentist as soon as possible!

Following are some immediate treatments:
Broken Tooth: Save any tooth fragments. Rinse mouth with warm water. If the area is bleeding, apply a piece of gauze. A cold compress held on the cheek can reduce swelling and lessen tooth pain. Visit your Daly City dentist as soon as you can.

Lost Filling: Save the filling if you can. It can help your dentist determine why it came out. Do not let food get stuck in the hole left by the filling. Do not chew on the tooth. Brush it gently. Call your Daly City dentist’s office to schedule an emergency appointment right away.

Displaced Crowns: If there is pain, you may apply a dab of clove oil with a Q-tip to the affected tooth (a common home remedy that may reduce pain). Save the crown. If you can’t see your Daly City dentist immediately, you can apply dental cement (available at drugstores) or denture adhesive to temporarily re-attach the crown until you can get to your Daly City dentist. Do not use other types of glue or adhesive.

By visiting your Daly City dentist as soon as possible, you avoid pain, infection and possible further tooth damage. If you delay treatment, even for a few days, you risk needing more extensive treatment later.

  1. Children’s teeth are soft until about age 10.
  2. A tooth with a crown can get a cavity.
  3. Your gum tissue is as essential as your teeth.
  4. Some prescription medications can increase your risk of dental caries.
  5. Some home faucet water filters remove fluoride.
  6. 19 percent of kids between the ages of 2 and 19 have untreated dental caries.
  7. Heartburn can be bad for teeth.
  8. Allergies can cause tooth grinding.

Floss Pick Facts For San Francisco

fast teeth whitening San Francisco

Dental patients who live in the San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay area want to keep their mouths as healthy and clean as possible. However, they are also looking for convenience, and that’s why many of them turn to floss picks instead of old-fashioned dental floss.

These little tools are quite handy. They usually have a handle that is pointed and can double as a toothpick, and a length of floss strung in a U-shaped groove. They are inexpensive and can be used more discreetly than floss.

While this may seem like a dream come true for those hoping to make flossing a more regular part of their oral health routine, floss picks are still a step below actual floss in effectiveness.

The American Dental Association has only approved dental floss for cleaning in between teeth. One issue is that floss picks can’t curve and form the angles needed for superior cleaning.

So, what is a responsible dental patient to do? The first thing is to communicate with your Daly City, California dentist and see what their opinion is. If you love floss picks, continue to use them when convenient, but still try to use regular dental floss daily.

If you are in the process of looking for a new dentist, we hope that you consider Kenneth Hovden DDS. We have been serving the San Francisco area since 1981 from our Daly City practice.

Our professional staff would love to hear any burning questions you have regarding flossing and other dental health concerns, as well as questions about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening and veneers.

Into the Thick of It – The Skinny on Toothpaste

Half Moon Bay cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Welcome to our blog, Daly City! I’m excited about how much I have to share with you about toothpaste and oral hygiene in the short time we have together. Enjoy!

Why does toothpaste seem gritty?
The abrasive nature of toothpaste is to aid in removing dental plaque and food from the surface of the teeth. Rough brushing becomes unnecessary for Daly City dental patients when the abrasives in the toothpaste can snag the mouth’s lingering food particles and polish the enamel at the same time.

What’s with the strong minty options?
Minty flavorants are used to encourage continued use of the paste and to freshen breath. However, powerful toothpaste alone is not designed to cure halitosis (bad breath) for Daly City men and women affected. While unflavored toothpastes exist, the world has also seen such flavors as peanut butter, iced tea, and ginger. To treat halitosis, it is important to avoid periodontal disease and also to brush the far back of the tongue, where bacteria lurk. Removing the source is essential and more effective than covering it up with minty flavorings.

What is fluoride’s place in a toothpaste?
Fluoride occurs in small amounts in plants, animals, and some natural water sources. It is championed by health-conscious San Francisco residents for preventing tooth decay and controlling gingivitis. Fluoride-containing compounds are present in many toothpastes to add another key dimension to the oral hygiene regimen for preventing decay.

How are toothpaste and flossing related?

Flossing regularly in conjunction with toothbrushing helps with averting bacterial growth, tooth decay and plaque buildup by simply removing chunks of food or substances that could break down the tooth.

Finally, what about the relationship between toothpaste and mouthwash?
The use of mouthwash cannot replace regular brushing and flossing. Mouthwash simply adds yet another effective layer of defense against bacterial growth in the mouth.

Dr. Hovden and the staff at Kenneth Hovden DDS want to encourage a committed, consistent approach to dental hygiene. We are located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202, Daly City, California 94015.

Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

San Francisco dentist

Believe it or not, plaque can rear its ugly head in any Daly City mouth – even yours – no matter how meticulous you try to be. If you have deep grooves, watch out. If you have a receding gum line, watch out. If you are a candy-loving Daly City resident with the proverbial sweet tooth, watch out.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail (that’s plaque). After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. (See picture, if you dare.) This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities will originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

A fabulous smile with fabulous teeth isn’t always the reality for San Francisco, San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay folks. We encourage anyone in the San Francisco area who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a significant investment, but the truth of just how much it will cost for veneers, braces teeth whitening, and even dental implants may surprise you. At our Daly City cosmetic dentistry office you can expect to learn about restorative dentistry, sleep apnea and snoring, TMJ treatment, Invisalign, Lumineers and any number of other dental services.

Children’s Cavities Are Not ‘Just A Part Of Growing Up’

Children's Cavities Are Not 'Just A Part Of Growing Up'

Today’s dental blog focuses on a preventative treatment often used to help impede the development of cavities in children.

Dental sealants are a thin coat of clear resin that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth, usually the rear molars. The back teeth are more prone to cavities because is difficult to reach them with a tooth brush and the surfaces contain pits and grooves that easily trap bacteria. It is hard for many adults to clean their back molars and almost impossible for our young Half Moon Bay children.

Dental sealants fill in the pits and grooves on the rear molars to create a smooth surface. San Francisco family dentists most often recommend sealants for children’s permanent back teeth, though sometimes they are used for adults, too.

Daly City parents may not realize how quickly a cavity can form in a young child’s mouth. Many Pacifica area kids that we see develop cavities even before they start kindergarten!

It is vital that our local parents start regular dental visits early for their toddlers and young children. The American Dental Association advises that a child’s initial dental exam take place soon after the first tooth erupts, but no later than the toddler’s first birthday.

Dental sealants protect teeth that have no decay (primary prevention) and also prevent further decay progression in teeth that show very early signs of disease (secondary prevention).

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we take special care of our young Daly City dental patients. We want each child’s dental visits to be pleasant and painless so they will never develop a fear of the dentist. We advise parents on the specific dental issues associated with each stage of childhood. Ask us about fluoride, sports mouthguards, and orthodontic treatment.

I am Kenneth Hovden of Kenneth Hovden DDS. I don’t believe that childhood cavities are unavoidable. Call my office at 650-755-6000 to schedule a Daly City dental exam.

I provide comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry for San Francisco people of all ages. My office is located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City.

“Keep Your Teeth Safe, Daly City”

Daly City General Dentistry To Keep Your Teeth Safe

Hopefully you are one of many health-conscious Daly City residents who is finding ways to get outside or to the gym and get moving. There has been an explosion in the variety of activities offered by personal trainers, all-purpose Daly City gyms, specialty facilities, and California recreation departments in recent years. With all these exciting ways to exercise becoming commonplace, people in the San Mateo, San Francisco, and Daly City areas may not be aware of the tooth risks associated with them.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden, a concerned Daly City dentist and fitness enthusiast, and I want to talk to you today about mouth protectors.

You might think that mouth protectors are only for ultimate fighters and football players, but actually mouth guards can and should be used during any activity where a blow to the face is possible.

This includes many common sports such as pick-up basketball games, volleyball, gymnastics, and bicycling. When you have a properly fitted mouth protector, you can prevent broken or lost teeth as well as lip, tongue, and jaw injuries.

Mouth protectors come in three main types: stock, boil and bite, and custom-fitted. The stock mouth protectors are pre-formed and ready to wear. Unfortunately, they rarely fit well. You can find boil and bite mouth protectors at sporting goods stores in the San Francisco area. They are to be softened in water and then formed to your mouth (make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Custom-fitted mouth protectors can be made by your Daly City dentist to make sure you have a perfect fit.

The soft tissues that line your cheeks and lips are especially susceptible to injury when you have braces or fixed bridge work, not to mention the damage that can be caused to the orthodontic appliances themselves. For these reasons, a mouth protector is extremely important for San Francisco patients undergoing these treatments. Your Daly City orthodontist may even suggest a mouth protector for your lower teeth as well.

If you have questions about sports dentistry in Daly City or any other dental issues, please contact my office and schedule an appointment. I look forward to meeting you.

Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City Cares For Teeth

Kenneth Hovden DDS Your Dentist In Daly City Cares For Teeth Dentists in Daly City are concerned with your oral health and thus care about the condition of your mouth and all of your many teeth. At Kenneth Hovden DDS we recognize that your teeth help you both eat and speak. You use your teeth to tear, scrape, and chew food, as well as to form words with your tongue. Teeth are an important part of your oral health and Kenneth Hovden DDS located in Daly City, California wants to help keep your mouth and teeth healthy.

We humans have two sets of teeth in our lifetime. The first set are your ‘primary teeth’, which many folks around Daly City often call ‘baby teeth’. Baby teeth typically start to come in at about 6 months old. An average healthy mouth for a Daly City resident has a total of 20 primary teeth by about age 5.

Your primary teeth will eventually fall out and new teeth known as ‘permanent teeth’ will grow in. Permanent teeth typically begin to come in around age 6 for most Daly City residents, but every person is unique and it could be a little earlier or later. By about age 13 an average healthy mouth should have 28 of the total 32 permanent teeth. The last four permanent teeth may or may not come, but typically come in between the ages of 17 and 21 if they do. Because of the late age that these last teeth come in they are commonly called ‘wisdom teeth’.

Many adults in the city of Daly City have their wisdom teeth pulled out because these teeth can be problematic to your oral health, such as crowding a mouth. Other adults in the Daly City area may not have these teeth pulled out because they are not causing problems. If you are concerned about the state of your wisdom teeth you can visit our local Daly City office and we can help you make a decision.

Caring for all of your teeth whether you are young and have 20 primary teeth or are an adult and have 28 to 32 permanent teeth is important for your overall health. Visiting your Daly City dentist regularly, and brushing and flossing daily are great ways to care for your many teeth. Kenneth Hovden DDS located in Daly City, cares about you oral health and teeth and can be reached by phone at 650-755-6000.

Advanced Dentis try in Daly City

Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry in Daly City The world of dentistry continues to advance at a rapid pace. If you have visited a Daly City dentist in the past few years, you have probably noticed the things that make your visit more comfortable, such as the ability to watch TV or listen to music while receiving treatment.

What may not be as obvious are the advances in techniques, tools and materials. Top Daly City dentists now use digital computer imaging which is safer than traditional x-rays. Dental technicians can store, retrieve and transmit digital images much easier than was possible with traditional x-ray film.

The use of dental lasers has also changed the face of dentistry. Laser surgery requires less anesthesia, minimizes swelling, and protects surrounding tissue. San Francisco dentists use lasers for detecting and treating cavities and dental technicians use them for the curing of restorative materials.

Another exciting development in cosmetic dentistry is the CAD-CAM technology that allows Daly City cosmetic dentists to perform restorations in a single visit. The types of procedures that can be completed in one visit include crowns, fillings, inlays, onlays and veneers.

If you need a thorough exam or want to improve your smile with cosmetic dentistry, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-755-6000 to schedule a consultation. During your consultation, you can see before and after photos of some of our smile makeover clients. We would love to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted, and we have the tools, experience and technology to make that happen.
