7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

Cosmetic dentistry in Daly City, CA

In a perfect world, each of your precious teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most California men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by dental caries, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair minor cosmetic issues – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is generally the most reasonably-priced option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of cavities. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Kenneth Hovden DDS leaves you with more of nature’s optimal dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab, they are commonly called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are commonly smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, stability, and function. A crown is commonly needed for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with acute decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to prevent further damage. Gum surgery is also executed for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Kenneth Hovden DDS patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the ideal solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, restrict bone recession, and do not affect the surrounding teeth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, custom-made implant-anchored dentures can be established in any configuration needed.

Are You At Risk For Bone Recession?

dental bone grafting Daly City

We all know that a healthy smile requires decay-free teeth and healthy gums, but how often do we appreciate our jaw bone? Our teeth need a strong firm foundation to remain healthy and beautiful.

Today’s post looks at bone recession. Occasionally, a patient experiences bone recession in their jaw which can cause tooth loss and other issues. However, it is generally the other way around. The bone loss occurs as a result of a lost tooth because the blood supply and stimulus necessary for maintaining healthy bone is taken away.

Let’s look at the most common causes of jaw bone recession:

Extracted Teeth
Bone is living tissue and needs stimulation to stay healthy and retain its size and density. Biting, chewing, talking and all the other normal mouth functions keep the portion of the bone surrounding the tooth root healthy. When a tooth is extracted, the bone that used to anchor the tooth root recedes as if it understands that it is no longer needed. A dental implant provides stimulation similar to the natural tooth and can impede bone recession.

Gum Infection
A gum infection can result when gum inflammation goes untreated and progresses to periodontitis. With periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth creating pockets which provide the perfect breeding ground for the harmful infection.

Gum infections can progress undetected, though there are usually warning signs. Swollen, painful gums, loose teeth, and gums that bleed when brushed are symptoms of periodontitis. The infection dissolves bone as the gums pull away from the tooth. Inadequate oral hygiene increase the risk of gum disease but other factors can compromise gum health. These include smoking (no surprise here), hormone levels, diseases that lower immune system effectiveness, medications that cause dry mouth, and genetic predisposition.

Abscessed Tooth
An abscess is a pus-filled pocket of infection that occurs in the nerve and roots of a tooth. As the infection attacks the tooth and bone tissue it creates a space that fills with pus. There are several treatments for a tooth abscess including antibiotics to kill the infection, a root canal, or extraction, if needed.

If you would like to replace a missing tooth with an implant, but don’t have enough bone at the implant site, you might be a candidate for bone grafting. Bone grafting may sound like major oral surgery but it is really a routine procedure performed in a dental office.

I am Dr. Kenneth Hovden of Kenneth Hovden DDS in Daly City. If you have experienced bone recession due to gum disease, an abscess, an extracted tooth, or any other reason, let’s consider your options. You may benefit from a dental implant, soft tissue grafts, or bone grafts. Dental implants can significantly improve your quality of life and prevent further recession. Dental Sealants – Another Tool For Cavity Prevention

Dental Sealants Cavity Prevention In San Mateo

Dental patients in the San Mateo, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay areas know that regular brushing and flossing are essential for optimal oral health. However, the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach into every small groove and depression in your teeth, especially the really bumpy back teeth. That’s where sealants can be invaluable.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is applied by your San Francisco dentist. This material is a resin that bonds to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, mainly in the pits and fissures. The plastic acts as a shield against acids and plaque that can damage the enamel.

Many Daly City residents might think that sealants are only for children and teenagers, but they can actually be beneficial for adults as well. If you are wondering if sealants are right for you, speak with your San Mateo, Pacifica, or Half Moon Bay dentist. This simple dental procedure can improve your oral health by protecting the surfaces that are particularly vulnerable to decay.

Many California dental insurance providers include dental sealants as a covered benefit, so check with your provider if you are considering them. If you don’t have dental insurance, ask us about financing options. Because they can prevent cavities, dental sealants can save you money in the long run.

I’m Dr. Kenneth Hovden, an experienced Daly City dentist. Thank you for visiting my dental blog. At our office we serve the San Francisco area by offering:

restorative dentistry
sleep apnea and snoring
TMJ treatment
Invisalign
Lumineers

If you have any questions about these or other cosmetic dental procedures, call us today at 650-763-8794 to schedule a consultation.  Our professional staff would be happy to assist you.

What Is Crown Lengthening?

gummy smile surgery Perfect smiles created at Kenneth Hovden DDS often require crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth. Some patients undergo crown lengthening surgery at Kenneth Hovden DDS to alter their gummy smile.

A gummy smile refers to upper teeth that appear too short because excess bone and soft tissue covers part of the teeth. When a gummy smile is eliminated, our Daly City patients can’t believe how it changes their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth.

Sometimes, a patient needs crown lengthening because of tooth fracture. When a tooth breaks at the gumline or a crown is fractured, crown lengthening makes tooth structure accessible for the necessary restoration.

Digital imaging is one of the technological tools that helps San Francisco dental professionals perform crown lengthening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures. When a San Mateo cosmetic dentist has a highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure, he/she is able to achieve the precision necessary to design smiles to the patient’s exact specifications.

If you are seeking a dental smile makeover and live in the San Francisco area, schedule a smile consultation by calling 650-763-8794. Perfect Teeth With Veneers

porcelain veneers price San Francisco

Today’s blog post focuses on an effective and versatile cosmetic dental procedure – porcelain veneers.

Veneers are individual covers for the front part of teeth. They are an exceptional way to correct a myriad of tooth imperfections such as chips, stains, yellowing, unattractive shape or minimal misalignment.

Have you ever wanted a minimally-invasive facelift for a tooth without getting an entire crown? Veneers are your answer! Super-strong, tooth-colored porcelain laminate is shaped into thin shells and custom-fitted for each patient’s unique set of teeth.

How many veneers should you get? This depends on how many teeth you want to improve and the overall condition of your teeth. Dr. Hovden will counsel you on the best strategy.

The thickness, color, alignment, and shape of your teeth affect the outcome as well as whether you have any gum recession. Veneers are matched to your existing teeth so they will blend seamlessly, but if you are planning to treat several teeth, you definitely want to have them created in the same “batch” at the lab.

The first step in the veneer process is to make a model of your teeth to work from. After that, a dental technician will use the model to create the veneers to the perfect size, shape, color, and level of translucency. Experienced cosmetic dentists and dental technicians elevate the level of artistry in this painstaking process.

Many patients wonder if veneers are as strong as their natural teeth. Though the veneer tooth-prep process weakens the tooth slightly, with proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years. Porcelain veneers are more durable than dental bonding, which is sometimes used to repair the same types of imperfections. Dental bonding generally has a shorter life span than veneers, so keep this in mind when comparing the costs of the two procedures.

If you are looking for a dentist with an artistic eye for stunning porcelain veneers, give Kenneth Hovden DDS a call. My name is Dr. Kenneth Hovden and I have been serving Daly City, California since 1981.

Celebrity Smiles In Daly City

Veneers in Daly City How do celebrities obtain brilliant white smiles that are always ready for the red carpet or a close-up? Do they avoid coffee? Not likely. Every star-watching magazine is full of pictures of famous people holding Starbucks cups. Do they avoid tobacco? Some probably do, but many actors and fashion models with dazzling white smiles are smokers.

Very few people (famous and non-famous alike) with perfect teeth were born with them. (…Sure, no one is born with teeth, but you know what I mean.) Celebrities have perfect smiles because they have undergone cosmetic dentistry.

Guess what? You can also have a smile like a supermodel or television news anchor because Dr. Kenneth Hovden at Kenneth Hovden DDS has as much experience and training in advanced cosmetic dentistry as any Hollywood cosmetic dentist.

Dr. Hovden has been providing smile makeovers for Daly City and Half Moon Bay dental patients since 1981. Tooth whitening is the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedure in San Mateo. Tooth bleaching quickly perks up your teeth and makes you feel like smiling all the time!

Porcelain veneers are used often in Pacifica cosmetic dental offices because they correct many problems including misshapen teeth, cracks and chips, and discolored teeth. Teeth that have been worn down extensively can also be repaired with veneers. Preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer is minimally invasive. The latest veneers do not require the removal of healthy enamel. Another plus: veneers are usually less expensive than complete crowns!

Tooth bleaching and veneers are just two of the many cosmetic dental procedures performed at Kenneth Hovden DDS. Schedule a Daly City cosmetic dental consultation today by calling 650-763-8794. At our office, you will always receive VIP treatment, without the annoying paparazzi!

We look forward to helping you achieve a celebrity smile.

(Note that the celebrities pictured above are not affiliated with our site; they just have great smiles!)
