Is Your Smile In A World Of Hurt?

full mouth reconstruction San Francisco

Do you have acute tooth damage, bone loss, or few or no teeth still intact? This post is for San Francisco area residents whose mouths are in a world of hurt.

First off, we feel for you. We understand how severe dental problems affect you every day of your life.

Whatever the cause of the condition – chemotherapy, recreational drug use, eating disorder, acute mouth injury, disability, inadequate oral hygiene, or simply poor overall health – there is hope.

Full mouth reconstruction can restore your previously healthy, beautiful smile or give you the beautiful smile you never had. Patients who undergo full mouth reconstruction regain their confidence to smile, eat, and speak normally. How would that influence your life?

Replacing missing teeth and adding bone through grafting restores underlying facial structure, improving or preventing that “sunk-in” look that develops when teeth are gone and the jawbone recedes.

Full mouth reconstruction (sometimes called full mouth restoration) is a term which refers to a combination of dental procedures that restore a smile for people with numerous damaged or missing teeth. Treatment may include any combination of the following procedures: crowns, inlays/onlays, dental bonding, white filling replacement, tooth implants, porcelain veneers, implant-anchored dentures, gum contouring, soft tissue grafts, bone grafts, and tooth whitening.

Dental implants are often the best tooth replacement for Kenneth Hovden DDS patients with missing teeth. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. If there is not enough bone to anchor an implant, bone grafting may be carried out to augment existing bone. The post integrates with the bone to provide a durable foundation for the abutment and beautiful crown. Dental implants are indistinguishable from original teeth in both form and function.

If you currently have dentures, speak with us about implant-anchored full or partial dentures. Significant improvements can be made even if you only get two or three tooth implants.

Crowns (sometimes called caps) are used when there is enough viable tooth structure that the tooth doesn’t need to be extracted. A crown adds strength to a tooth that has a large filling or has been injured. A crown can repair a bite misalignment and is usually necessary after a root canal. In a dental implant procedure, attaching the crown to the abutment is the final step.

Kenneth Hovden DDS offers a full menu of cosmetic dental care including total mouth reconstruction. Cosmetic dentistry may be more affordable than you think. Talk to us about financing or a multi-procedure treatment schedule that allows you to pay as you go. Restoring a healthy smile may be the best investment you ever make.

Affordable Teeth Whitening In San Francisco?

Affordable San Francisco Tooth Whitening Like most, you have probably seen the multitude of ads for ‘free teeth whitening kits’.

Some show a ‘real mom’ who discovered a ‘tooth whitening secret’. Others assure you that their system is the one that ‘dentists don’t want you to know about’. Many contain a link to a page that contains a convincing tooth whitening testimonial. They bolster their legitimacy by aligning themselves with respected companies such as CNN, USA Today and Forbes.

Unfortunately, most of these are rip-offs. In a recent article, the Better Business Bureau explains the scam:

The countless web sites for various teeth whitening products claim to offer a no-risk, money back guarantee, free trial of the product. To sign up, customers must provide a credit or debit card number to cover shipping. Complainants to BBB state that they are billed before their trial ends and continue to be billed after they have told the company they want to cancel.

Complainants also may find mystery charges for other companies and services that they didn’t realize they were signing up for with their ‘free’ trial.

The BBB has received complaints about the following company/product names:

  • Dazzle White
  • White Smile
  • Teeth Smile
  • Dazzle Smile
  • Ivory White
  • Max White
  • My Whitening
  • Gleaming White Smile
  • Advanced Wellness Research

Don’t trust your smile to an internet scammer. Your dental office is the only place for safe teeth bleaching. You don’t want to take a chance with your credit card number or your tooth enamel! Call us at Kenneth Hovden DDS for advanced cosmetic dentistry and worry-free tooth whitening. You can reach us at 650-763-8794

Can You Straighten Your Teeth Without Braces?

Spring Retainers Can Correct Alignment Without Braces

Many people could improve their smile with braces, yet only a portion are currently undergoing treatment. Some delay or forego orthodontic treatment because they believe it is a difficult, pricey process requiring traditional metal braces.

Not every tooth alignment problem requires braces, however. An orthodontic appliance known as a spring retainer is often a great solution for people who need minimal adjustment to correct alignment (and do not have an overbite or underbite).1

Spring retainers are removable, less noticeable, and less costly than conventional braces. Unlike traditional retainers which are designed to maintain alignment and prevent further shifting, spring retainers can move teeth 1-2 mm in the desired direction. They are often recommended for orthodontic patients who neglected to wear their retainer after undergoing orthodontic treatment to have their teeth aligned.

Creating a spring retainer is relatively uncomplicated: an orthodontics lab forms a mold of the teeth based on the desired end result. Spring retainers are most often used for the front teeth and incisors but can sometimes be expanded to include other teeth as well.2

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we offer a variety of orthodontic options. If you would like your teeth corrected, call us at 650-763-8794 to schedule an orthodontic consultation.

We also offer the full spectrum of cosmetic dental procedures including teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges, and cosmetic bonding.

Infancy Through Childhood: Instill Good Brushing Habits

infant dental exam Daly City

New parents may be surprised by the American Dental Association’s recommendations on infant oral care. Parents are advised to begin brushing their baby’s teeth as soon as the first teeth emerge. After all, brand-new teeth are just as vulnerable to dental caries as older teeth.

Parents are encourage to use a cloth and a smidgen of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) to wipe each tooth. As more teeth come in, it becomes more critical for the teeth to be brushed after each meal or, at least, twice a day.

It is vital to settle upon the proper toothbrush, in order to make brushing time as pleasant as possible. A soft bristled brush is best with a small amount of toothpaste. Infant and toddler-sized toothbrushes with a small head of bristles are useful. Also, there are circle and triangular-shaped brushes that allow your toddler to walk around with their brush with less chance of injury in case of a fall.

If the toothpaste is causing an unpleasant struggle, brush without toothpaste. The goal is to remove food bits that will create bacteria followed by plaque and then cavities.

When two teeth touch, it’s time to floss. Flossing is essential to make sure no food is lodged between the teeth. Proper flossing requires fine motor skills which most kids don’t develop before age six or seven. Parents need to assist with flossing until they are sure their child can do it effectively.

Until the child is old enough to properly brush his or her teeth, they should receive adult supervision and guidance. Instilling the proper brushing and flossing methods will reap lifelong benefits. While it may seem that supervising them is time consuming, remember that it’s resulting in a daily habit that will protect their health. Also, dental expenses related to poor oral hygiene will be avoided.

Your child’s first dental visit should be within six months of the first tooth appearing and no later than their first birthday. It may seem early, but just as your pediatrician sees your baby regularly to make sure their physical health is on track and counsel you about your vital role, you can count on your dentist to look out for potential issues and counsel you about how to help your child preserve a healthy smile.

Seek your dentist’s counsel regarding pacifiers and sippy cups, nighttime bottles, and x-ray safety. Dentist can counsel parents with older children about sealants, tooth protection for athletics, and orthodontics.

If you live in the San Francisco area and don’t yet have a trusted family dentist, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794 to schedule your child’s dental appointment with Dr. Kenneth Hovden. By starting young, your child will become familiar with our friendly staff, ensuring that he or she never develops a fear of the dentist.

Are Dental Veneers Reversible?

prepless veneers

With many  residents looking to improve their smile, porcelain veneers are a successful option. Unlike a crown that completely covers the tooth, a veneer is a super thin layer of a very tough porcelain, composite bonding, or ceramic. When bonded to a tooth, the veneer creates a natural, translucent, and perfect new surface. It improves the appearance of the visible portion of your tooth instantly. Here’s a look at the process:

The Consultation

First, schedule a consultation with Dr. Hovden. Before you come in, examine what you do not like about your smile and know how you want it improved. Veneers may not be optimal for you. Other cosmetic dental procedures may be a better fit for the characteristics you wish to change.

Porcelain veneers can repair many minor to moderate troubles, including the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Gaps between teeth can be filled, and teeth can be lengthened or shortened to complete your beautiful smile.

We’ll discuss both types of veneers: “traditional” and “prepless.” Before a traditional veneer is put on the tooth, the dentist first removes a very thin layer of enamel. Enamel cannot be replaced, which is one reason this method is irreversible.

The second method is called “no-prep” or “prepless.” With this type, enamel removal is usually not necessary. When no enamel is removed, the treatment can be reversible. However, this method has specific criteria.

In addition, it is possible to use both types of veneers for multiple teeth, depending on the condition of each tooth.

Your dentist will help you evaluate your unique needs and guide you on how to reach your goals. Once you and your dentist have created a dental plan, your dentist will work with a laboratory and dental team to assure everything is carried out as discussed.

If you do not have a cosmetic dentist, we invite you to visit our distinctive practice. Dr. Hovden is a renowned smile makeover artist. Call 650-763-8794 today to schedule a cosmetic dental consultation.

8 Things You Should Know About Your Baby’s Teeth

Daly City pediatric dentistry

Life is hectic for new moms and dads and some function on very little sleep for several months. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we don’t want the first year to fly by in a blur without busy parents giving a thought to their baby’s teeth. Unfortunately “out of sight, out of mind” is often the case. It’s never too early for new parents to construct a plan for their child’s lifelong oral health.

1. Before the first teeth appear, clean gums with a soft damp cloth or piece of gauze after feeding.

2. Prevent baby bottle tooth decay.  Parents are cautioned from the beginning not to put babies to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. However, since baby-bottle cavities is still fairly common, this warning bears repetition. Baby bottle tooth decay is entirely preventable. If your baby will not sleep without a bottle, use only water. Moms who breastfeed should understand that breast milk is just as effective at creating an environment for decay. If your child uses a pacifier, don’t dip it in sugar or honey.

3. Take your infant to the dentist early. That’s right – infant. Your child’s first dental exam should occur when the first teeth erupt, usually between six months and one year of age.

4. When your baby’s first tooth peeks through, begin brushing gently with a small, soft toothbrush and a grain of rice sized dot of fluoride toothpaste. This aids in keeping that tooth decay-free while allowing your baby to get comfortable with regular oral hygiene.

5. From the ages of 3 to 6, the amount of toothpaste can increase to a pea-sized dab. Most children swallow instead of spitting. You don’t want your child to swallow more than a minuscule smear of toothpaste. While fluoride is important, too much can be detrimental.

6. Consider dental sealants. Sealants guard the teeth and prevent cavities by filling in the cracks and fissures where food particles can hide, breeding dangerous bacteria that doesn’t take long to create cavities. Sealants are especially essential in the back teeth which, due to the abundance of crevasses, are hardest to clean properly. During your child’s first check-up at our Daly City office, you can talk to Kenneth Hovden about sealants. Sealants aren’t usually applied until all of the teeth have come in, but it’s a good idea to seek a dentist’s advice at your first visit.

7. Talk to your dentist about pacifier use, thumb-sucking, or any other habits that affect teeth and jaw development.

8. Teach your toddler to drink from a cup as soon as possible. The fewest months your child uses a bottle, the better. Even if your child loves his bottle, you are going to have to take it away sooner or later.

At in Daly City, we love our littlest patients. To make an appointment for your infant or toddler, call us today at 650-763-8794.

How Do Veneers Create Stunning Smiles?

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in San Francisco Veneers have a multitude of applications in Daly City cosmetic dentistry. With veneers, you can transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the brilliance and translucency of healthy tooth enamel. Many San Francisco dental patients have received veneers to cover worn enamel. Some believe they look twenty years younger!

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? Tooth grinding, natural wear and other factors can roughen tooth edges. Veneers are a minimally invasive correction for uneven tooth edges.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? If your teeth are otherwise healthy, veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Veneers can fix that, too. Veneers can be fabricated in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your other teeth and skin tones.

Porcelain veneers are paper-thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. Traditional veneers required the removal of a thin layer of tooth structure. Prepless veneers are applied to unaltered teeth.

Veneers are strong, natural looking, and one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. Of course, a tooth with extensive damage may need a dental crown.

At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for you. Kenneth Hovden DDS is located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City. We provide premium dental care for many of your friends and neighbors in the greater San Francisco area. Our phone number is 650-763-8794.

Teeth Look Too Short? Lengthen Them!

fix gummy smile Daly City

Most Daly City people who are considering cosmetic dentistry are aware of the cosmetic dental procedures that are frequently advertised in the San Francisco area.

There are porcelain veneers: a custom made wafer-thin covering permanently attached to the front of a tooth to make it stain-free and perfectly shaped. Veneers can repair small chips and crack in teeth that are free of decay. Many Kenneth Hovden DDS patients get minimally invasive veneers on their top six teeth for a dramatic improvement.

Orthodontia has received a lot of attention in California in the past twenty years with the introduction of invisible and short-term braces. And braces are not only for ‘tweens and teenagers. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we have seen more adults straighten their teeth to achieve dazzling smiles with discrete orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain crowns have been around for generations but continue to restore decayed or damaged teeth while providing beauty, strength and natural function. Porcelain crowns are also used with state-of-the art dental implants to restore missing teeth.

A cosmetic dental procedure that is lesser known in the Daly City area is crown lengthening. If you feel that your teeth appear too short or that your smile exposes more gum than you would like (a ‘gummy smile’), you may be interested in crown lengthening.

Crown lengthening surgery is a safe and effective procedure that exposes more of the visible part of the tooth while minimizing the vertical length of exposed gum tissue.

When a gummy smile is corrected, our Daly City crown lengthening patients are often surprised at how it positively affects their whole face. They love their new smile which reveals pleasing, symmetrical portions of their upper teeth that have been hidden under gum tissue their whole life.

Sometimes, crown lengthening is used when a tooth is fractured at the gumline. The surgery makes tooth structure accessible for the necessary restoration.

Digital imaging helps San Francisco dental professionals perform crown lengthening with exactness. A highly-detailed, 3-D image of tooth and bone structure allows the cosmetic dentist to contour a gumline to the patient’s exact specifications.

If you would like to find out if crown lengthening is right for you, schedule a consultation by calling Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794. We are located at 901 Campus Dr Ste 202 in Daly City. We look forward to showing you photos of crown lengthening patients who are enjoying their new look.

Tooth Bleaching Fact And Fiction

Daly City Teeth Whitening You have probably seen ads for bleaching products contain terms such as “white brite,” “22 carbamide peroxide” and “peroxide teeth.” How do you separate tooth bleaching fact from fiction?

Some tooth whitening dentists will guarantee fantastic results for any patient that desires a whiter smile. At Kenneth Hovden DDS, we only recommend tooth bleaching for patients that are good candidates for the process. We invite you to speak with Dr. Hovden, DDS at our Daly City office. Not all teeth whitening systems are appropriate for every person.

Don’t be fooled by smile whitening hype and risk poor results. If you have existing cosmetic dental work such as crowns, bonding, partial dentures or bridge work, it is critical to talk to an experienced professional about worry-free teeth whitening.

If you have all-natural teeth that are dull or stained, tooth whitening will probably brighten your smile. If you have several crowns in the front of your mouth, veneers, or gums that have receded, conventional tooth-whitening may not be successful.

Porcelain veneers may be a better solution for you. There are several brands of veneers such as Lumineers by Cerinate, da Vinci and Mac. The vast majority of Daly City veneer recipients are delighted with the results. Porcelain veneers not only brighten your smile, they can provide many other improvements.

Veneers are sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because they can correct tooth misalignment and gaps as well as provide instant teeth whitening.

Schedule a consultation by calling 650-763-8794. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your unique smile.

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

Cosmetic dentistry in Daly City, CA

In a perfect world, each of your precious teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most California men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by dental caries, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to repair minor cosmetic issues – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is generally the most reasonably-priced option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of cavities. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Kenneth Hovden DDS leaves you with more of nature’s optimal dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab, they are commonly called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are commonly smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, stability, and function. A crown is commonly needed for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with acute decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to prevent further damage. Gum surgery is also executed for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Kenneth Hovden DDS patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the ideal solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, restrict bone recession, and do not affect the surrounding teeth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, custom-made implant-anchored dentures can be established in any configuration needed.

For more specifics about any of these procedures, call Kenneth Hovden DDS at 650-763-8794. Thanks for visiting the Kenneth Hovden DDS blog. We appreciate your interest in our Daly City dental practice.
